We are told this will primarily impact Windows users, but also has some impacts for Linux users. Michael gives us some more details of what this means, including "only critical fixes and security vulnerabilities" will be fixed moving forward - with security fixes provided quarterly (instead of monthly). We are told the effects for Linux users are less, though it will likely mean less time is spent by Intel engineers in fixing Linux driver issues, and the possibility of reduced CI coverage for older graphics, but thankfully all code is open source. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-Gen9-To-Legacy-Model === Canonical Continues Working To Improve Its Steam Snap === Michael Larabel reminds us Canonical engineers are continuing to work on the Steam snap "for making that confined version of Valve's Linux game client viable and useful to Ubuntu gamers". The snap package is still 'beta', so hasn't replaced the debian package. We are told the latest fixes include "fixing HiDPi issues, addressing locale issues, and" more. Mention is made of the "kisak-core20" release the week prior which allows more "up-to-date Mesa drivers inside the Steam Snap" which are better for games running at "optimal speed". Links are provided for more details, or if you'd like to give the Steam Snap a try on Ubuntu. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Steam-Snap-Fixes-Enhancements == Other Articles of Interest == * Review: Framework’s next-gen Laptop follows through on its upgradeable promises - https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/07/review-frameworks-next-gen-laptop-follows-through-on-its-upgradeable-promises/5/#h1 == Featured Audio and Video == === Ubuntu On Air: Ubuntu Desktop Team Indaba - July 29, 2022 14:00 UTC === “Thunderbird has been undergoing some major changes recently, and there are even more exciting design updates on the horizon.
