This episode will include Heather from the Ubuntu Desktop team, plus Ryan Gorley from Freehive. They'll discuss the "beautiful new 22.04.1 video" (link provided) made by Ryan Gorley in this "behind the scenes" which covers the "methods and tools used". If you can't make the stream (on youtube and twitch), questions can be left on this thread. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-desktop-team-indaba-august-26-2022-17-00-utc/30100 === UbuCon Asia 2022 - Call for Talks and Workshops === Youngbin Han informs us that "Ubu``Con Asia 2022 is now accepting talks and workshop proposals", with submissions open till 14 September. A list of accepted proposal topics is provided, though topics outside of the lists will be considered, with Lightning talks and Bo``Fs not yet open. A link is provided to learn more, or submit your proposal, with email also provided if your questions weren't answered. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubucon-asia-2022-call-for-talks-and-workshops/30096 === Developing a Wayland Compositor using Mir === Alan Griffiths starts with a quick reminder of the aims of the Mir project. We are told the Mir codebase includes four different Wayland compositors, with a full list of these provided (with links to code). A great number of examples are provided, including "code and logic" that "proves Mir is flexible" having shipped in Ubuntu Touch and Ubuntu Frame. The document then provides instruction on "building your own compositor with Mir" including the C++ code that isn't much longer than the common "Hello World" code. This post is intended as documentation on Mir. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/developing-a-wayland-compositor-using-mir/30112 === Proposal: Drop gnome-todo from default install === Jeremy Bicha proposes that Ubuntu Desktop "drop the GNOME Todo app" from Ubuntu 22.10 installs. Jeremy gives the history of the app in Ubuntu Desktop, plus in the GNOME project, including its new life as Endeavour as a non-core GNOME app. Jeremy reports GNOME 41 is uploading now, but mentions Endeavour 42 will "follow (maybe next week)" but needs approval due to the name change. The reasons for the drop proposal are given, which include a broken date picker (with link provided). https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/proposal-drop-gnome-todo-from-default-install/30118 == The Planet == === Debuginfod is coming to Ubuntu === Sergio Durigan Junior blogs about his work on bringing debuginfod to Ubuntu, explaining the service and how it will be deployed. We are told the deployment in Ubuntu will take place in stages, with the first expected in mere weeks; "indexing and serving all of the available debug symbols from the official Ubuntu repository" for all supported releases of Ubuntu. Later stages will occur in subsequent cycles, which will increase the usefulness of this project. https://blog.sergiodj.net/2022/08/14/debuginfod-is-coming-to-ubuntu.html == Other Community News == === Microsoft and Canonical announce native .NET availability in Ubuntu 22.04 hosts and containers === "Canonical is proud to welcome the .NET development platform, as a native experience on Ubuntu hosts and container images, starting in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS". We are told upgrades don't require commands, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS uses GNOME 42, the latest toolchains (Python, Rust, Ruby, Go & more) along with many other additions & fixes. Jack tells us it's a good upgrade and that we should take it if offered the chance to upgrade; or a link is provided so we can download & install it. https://www.techrepublic.com/article/ubuntu-22-04-1 == In the Blogosphere == === Ubuntu Linux Preparing systemd-hwe To Ease OEM Hardware Enablement === Michael Larabel writes that systemd-hwe package is being prepared for Ubuntu 22.10 that changes the update hardware rules. Rather than a SRU (stable release updates) systemd-hwe is separating those udev rules into a separate package. Michael provides a link to systemd's hwdb for update info for entries in the database. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Ubuntu-systemd-hwe === Wine-Staging 7.15 Released - Currently At 536 Patches Atop Upstream Wine === Michael Larabel follows up on Wine's 7.15 version release reporting on the latest patches and additions for the upstream Wine code base. The first mention is of a org.freedesktop.secrets standard upgrade that "enables compatibility with third-party credential storage methods in most KDE apps" via KWallet. Marius mentions a number of other improvements, provides some pictures fragments, as well links to the full changelog for more details. https://9to5linux.com/kde-frameworks-5-97-adds-support-for-3rd-party-credential-storage-methods-to-kde-apps === Proton 7.0-4 Released For Steam Play With Many Game Fixes, More Playable Titles === Michael Larabel reports on Valve's version 7.0-4 Proton release for Steam Play. Michael lists many games that are now known to work and as well many fixes and improvements for other games/hardware. These should begin appearing upon launch of Steam - else there is a provided link to Proton on Git``Hub for the source code and change-log. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Proton-7.0-4-Released === Nautilus 43 Beta Arrives in Ubuntu 22.10 Daily Builds === Joey Sneddon tells us the "Nautilus 43 beta has arrived in the latest daily builds of Ubuntu 22.10". Joey also gives the reason why this is big news, and that the "new-look GTK4/libadwaita version of the Nautilus file manager sits proud within Ubuntu's Yaru-themed desktop". Joey notes this app looks "more modern", but he notices an extra click is required for one function. This isn't the only change Joey noted; with the latest 43 beta builds of GNOME calculator, and GNOME Settings daemon also present on the daily. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/08/nautilus-43-beta-arrives-in-ubuntu-22-10-daily-builds === These are the Best New Features in GNOME 43 === Joey Sneddon writes that "GNOME 43 is fast approaching" release with a "barrage of new features". In this post, Joey tells us the "notable improvements" as he sees it in GNOME 43. Many new features, or changes are highlighted in this rather lengthy post. Many screen captures are shown, including some GIFs to help us better appreciate the changes, with the smaller changes as seen by Joey, just being listed. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/08/gnome-43-new-features === KDE Gear - KDE Applications - 22.08 Released === Michael Larabel gives note to various changes, refinements, and bug fixes on the set of KDE applications, frameworks, and libraries found in this latest release.
