About `apt upgrade` and phased updates

Sally Makin documents phased updates that are now used by Ubuntu systems. We are shown an example message we may see due to phased updates, and told why this change is actually a good thing, requiring no change from us. We are told security updates are never phased, with a brief discussion on how we could bypass the phasing quickly, or disable them. We are reminded this isn't a new feature, but is more widely used now, along with a brief discussion of how it works, with links if we want more details too.

The Planet

Ubuntu 2022v1 secure boot key rotation and friends

Julian Andres Klode writes about the Ubuntu 2022v1 secure boot rotation, including a brief history of how we got here. A brief introduction to the components of secure booting is given, plus a reminder of the problems encountered: like with BootHole in 2020 for some users. The creation of 2022v1-v3 signing keys, shim 15.7, what is in the works, what is proposed, and more is revealed in this long and detailed post.

WINE Windows translation layer has matured like a fine... you get the picture

Liam Proven tells us about WINE 8.0, giving an opinion that it's matured 'nicely', and thus upgrades now are "getting boring" (a good thing). We are shown a screen picture, and a link to the release notes, along with some details of the change. Next covered is DXVK 2.1 which "translates Direct3D" calls to Vulkan calls, where we are told why it's important for some companies and users.
