Introduction

The Ubuntu Wine Team is here to make it easy to run Windows applications under Ubuntu. We can make it even easier than Windows itself.

Community tasks:

  • Answering questions about Wine usage, and directing users to the appropriate resources

Development tasks:

  • During open development, help direct upstream Wine development towards the features we need.
  • Near release time, figure out the best version of Wine to ship for the stable release.

Our goal is seamless Wine integration into the Ubuntu desktop. Users won't even realize they're running Wine - they're running the applications they want. For Hardy, this means implementing the [:BetterIntegratedWineSpec: BetterIntegratedWine] blueprint. For longer-term goals, we have BestIntegratedWine.

Contact

Our IRC channel is #ubuntu-wine on Freenode. It still needs to be properly registered.

We will have a mailing list, however it also needs to be created.

We do not have a forum, however there is a general Wine forum at http://wine-forum.org/ - note that this is not an Ubuntu specific forum. There are very frequent user threads on specific Wine applications in the ubuntu forums as well, especially in the games forum. Please try and direct development discussion to the mailing list; day to day usage can be done wherever you're comfortable.

How to Contribute

  • One thing we need is translations of the .desktop files. These are not done automatically through rosetta, and must be done by hand. These are translations for the stuff under the Applications->Wine menu: (Browse C:\ Drive, Configure Wine, Uninstall Wine Software, and Programs). Eventually, these will all be replaced following BetterIntegratedWine, but they won't be removed by Hardy.

  • Wine's Tahoma replacement font is missing glyphs for a lot of character sets. This results in Wine rendering blank letters there. See the links in [https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/188368 this bug on launchpad] if you'd like to help.

During open development

Near release time

  • Test a specific list of applications to find the best version of Wine to use. For the next version of Ubuntu, we can add applications to this list, however every old application should still work at least as well (ie, no Wine regressions).

Projects

  • The Wine package is maintained by ScottRitchie

  • Our main upstream here is the [http://winehq.org Wine project], however we will also need help from other upstreams for different integration tasks.

  • Most important right now is [http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11551 implementing Console Configuration] within Wine. This is a blocker for other integration tasks.

  • Stuff we need from other projects (eg gnome-app-install) will be outlined here. For now, check BetterIntegratedWineSpec

Launchpad Membership Policy

There is an Ubuntu Wine Team in launchpad: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine

So far, membership has been simply accepted and the team hasn't been used much. This will change after our first meeting.

Meetings

Our first IRC meeting will be scheduled later. For now, just join #ubuntu-wine on Launchpad, which is lurked continuously.

Agenda:

  • Figure out the specific role of the Ubuntu Wine Team in launchpad (Launchpad bug contact?)
  • Find volunteers for the different development tasks
  • Make sure we know who to contact from other teams when we need something (eg, a Windows version of the Hardy theme)
  • Decide how often to hold meetings (monthly, bi-weekly)
