What is Xubuntu?

Xubuntu is a free, open source operating system suitable for both your desktop and laptop. Whether you use it at home, at school, or at work, Xubuntu contains all the applications you will ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

The Xubuntu development team defines the mission of Xubuntu in the following statement:

  • The goal of Xubuntu is to produce an easy to use distribution, based on Ubuntu, using Xfce as the graphical desktop, with a focus on integration, usability and performance, with a particular focus on low memory footprint. The integration in Xubuntu is at a configuration level, a toolkit level, and matching the underlying technology beneath the desktop in Ubuntu. Xubuntu will be built and developed as part of the wider Ubuntu community, based around the ideals and values of Ubuntu.

Xfce4 is a lightweight desktop environment. Designed for productivity, it loads and executes applications quickly, while conserving system resources. Xfce4 has been supported in Ubuntu's universe since Hoary. In 2006, Xubuntu was born as a sibling of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu.

Get Involved!

Anyone who wants to get involved with Xubuntu should join #xubuntu on irc.freenode.net first. Giving support to other people vary from one-liner answers to solving problems including some known and unknown bugs. The channel is also a good place to get known before taking a bigger part of some problem - or joining the team.

Development discussion is taking place on the mailing list and #xubuntu-devel on irc.freenode.net. You can create a launchpad account to file bugs you encounter or to help triage bugs reported by other users. You are also welcome to get involved in our development team if you want to help make Xubuntu a superb desktop!

Click on the Get Involved link at the top of this page for more details.

If you are a Xubuntu User, feel free to join the xubuntu-user group on launchpad. Xubuntu users are also encouraged to join #xubuntu on irc.freenode.net and help others out per their time, interest and skill.
