We’re preparing Lubuntu 17.04, Zesty Zapus, for distribution in April 2017. With this second alpha you can get a glimpse of what the next version will contain. We have some interesting things happening, so read on for highlights and information.

NOTE: This is the Alpha 2 pre-release. Lubuntu Pre-releases are NOT recommended for:

• Regular users who are not aware of pre-release issues.
• Anyone who needs a stable system.
• Anyone uncomfortable running a possibly frequently broken system.
• Anyone in a production environment with data or workflows that need to be reliable.

Lubuntu Alpha 2 pre-releases ARE recommended for:

• Users who want to help us test by finding, reporting, and/or fixing bugs. You can find more about helping to test and bug triage at Lubuntu testing.

• Lubuntu developers.
• People wanting to see and test how the current snapshot of Lubuntu 17.04 will look and behave.

Getting Lubuntu 17.04 Alpha 2

The full listing of available images is here. You must check both the download and then the check install media on 1st boot before attempting an install. Instructions for burning the image to a CD / DVD or copying to a USB flash drive can be found on the Burning ISO Howto.

Alpha 2 Highlights

• An LXQt image is still being worked on, please be patient.
• Various different LXDE packages have been updated, for example LXPanel has been updated to 0.9.3 from 0.8.2.
• This Zesty Zapus snapshot includes the v4.9 kernel.

Known Problems

Lubuntu Applications

This is our list of known bugs affecting applications that Lubuntu uses but relies on others to maintain.

• gnumeric menu ->help ->about gnumeric -> license button, does not work. (1516454).

• abiword text cursor and border start to flicker. (1574278).

• unable to unlock session after suspend (1656399).

• Software properties gtk implies my cpu is unknown and not working. (1444682).

• Desktop file does not open ImageMagick from the menu (1550210). - FIX INCOMING, waiting on imagemagick to migrate from proposed

• gparted does not recognize the iso9660 file system in cloned Ubuntu USB boot drives (1622313).

Lubuntu-specific Bugs

These are maintained by the Lubuntu team.

We are currently having some artwork issues, but our artwork team is working hard to fix them. The progress is tracked in bug 1659745.

LXDE

• run dialog called from one desktop opens on the desktop with preferences dialog, regardless of which desktop is current (1445818).

• changing multiple desktop names only results in the first being changed. (1522625).

Lubuntu Installer

• All images require a DVD or USB. As a workaround, use the server or netboot images.

• Lubuntu 16.10 slideshow still incorrectly showing Lubuntu Software Center (1633148).

• GTK warning about "The :insensitive pseudo-class is deprecated. Use :disabled instead." in Lubuntu 16.10 installer output (1633135).
