In ancient days when I was a die-hard Debian fan (still am!), I always ran into a dead-end so far as proprietary drivers were concerned, until I decided to give Ubuntu a try; the version I found myself trying out was the Jaunty Jackalope, and ''voila'' - I was beholden to the most phenomenal experience I had ever had with ''any'' OS; it was then that I was once and for all able to free myself of the `serfdom' (the words of Richard Stallman himself) of a certain other OS detrimental to the long-term health of my machines. Aside from the many marvels I have unraveled by doing so, the feeling of being in complete control, the feeling of freedom, is exhilarating, and not something that can be parted with once given the taste. GNU/Linux is more than software; it is an idea - an idea so powerful it may never be extinguished. |
