I am a teenager passionate about technology. I have been generally interested in it since I was nine, but I have been using Ubuntu since February of 2015. I transitioned to Lubuntu in early July, because I liked the desktop environment better, and I soon then got involved. I'm a 16 year old who likes Linux, Open Source, and computers. I'm still in high school (secondary school), but I work as the Director of Operations at Altispeed Technologies and contribute to Ubuntu, Debian, and other great projects in my free time.

I met wxl, and we established a Padawan/Master relationship. This is the same terminology used by Linux Padawan, although we met in the Lubuntu IRC channels. Through my passion of learning about Linux, I kept talking with him, and he has helped me tremendously. I cannot thank him enough for all the time and effort he has spent with me, and he has truly helped my Linux experience go a lot smoother(although I had to meet him halfway).  {*} Lubuntu Release Manager

In August 2015, I looked and saw that the Ubuntu US Wisconsin LoCo Team was not active, and I wanted to do all I could to change that. So I contacted Anthony Hook about bringing new energy to the team, and to my surprise, he responded. So I have been working with Anthony to get to know a lot of the people. As of November 16, 2015, Anthony transferred the position of Contact to me. I have been doing my best to help with meetings, communication, and just getting to know a few of the people. I scheduled a Meet and Greet meeting, to get a feeling for who was around, and we had a great turnout. We will continue to have monthly meetings, and maybe soon get verified. I am tremendously excited for our new direction, and it will be an honor to help facilitate.  {*} Ubuntu Core Developer

In late August 2015 and early September 2015, I did some investigating, and I found QA. At first, because my computer at the time didn't have hardware virtualization support, I just did Package QA, but I didn't quite understand what that meant. I took a short hiatus from that until I got my new computer in late September. I then ventured into ISO QA, and although I have done little portions, I have helped a little around there.  {*} Ubuntu Membership Board Member

In late November 2015, I had various conflicts with several people, and it was clear that my interpersonal skills were lacking(see the testimonials by phillw and teward below). Due to the recommendation of several people, I am limiting my offtopic related conversations and focusing more on finding my place in the community. By April or May 2016, I will reassess where I am, and my goal is to apply for membership once I have properly developed my interpersonal skills to a point where they are more productive then counterproductive. I am using this as a learning experience and as time for me to focus more on contributions to Ubuntu rather then developing/preventing relationships in the community. This should be interpreted as a self-evaluation and enhancement of my skills rather then a derogatory characteristic of me. === To-do list of Contribution Options to Explore ===

This is my to-do list of contribution options to explore:
 * Bug triage
 * Documentation
 * IRC
 * Website improvements for the QA tracker
 * Development
  * LXQt
  * Git
  * tmux
  * irssi

And many more, although these are what I can think of at the time.

Beyond the world of Ubuntu
Ubuntu is not the only project I am involved in. There are many other projects that I can be involved in to increase my skills. Below are some different tasks that I want to complete outside of Ubuntu:

Certifications
I plan on getting these certifications before the end of 2016:
 * CompTIA A+
 * LPI
  * Linux Essentials
  * LPIC-*

Programming Languages
In order to complete various tasks, it is vital for me to learn a few new programming languages. Below are the ones I plan on learning:
 * C
 * C++
 * Python
 * Drupal
 * Java
 * PHP

Debian
Since Debian is a vital upstream project, in the future it is very possible that I will contribute there to help Debian and it's derivatives.

Projects
Works in Progress
As I am looking to further develop my skills, here are some projects that I have been spending time doing, some of these are transferred from the above section to a work in progress:
 * Sir Lenny the Lubuntu Bot
  * A new bot for #lubuntu-devel
  * Written in Python
  * Sole developer(besides wxl just doing some cleanup here and there)
  * On Github here
   * Pull requests will be rejected until I get the core functions done
 * ubuntu-wisconsin.org
  * A website for the Ubuntu US Wisconsin LoCo Team to help better evangelize Ubuntu in Wisconsin
  * Meant to explain what Ubuntu is and where to find more information
  * Written in HTML and CSS, with a transition to Bootstrap coming soon
  * Primary developer, although adueppen is an active contributor as well
  * On Github here
   * Pull requests are welcome, but our main focus right now is on content, so please refrain from doing major aesthetic changes
 * Google Code In
  * I am a mentor
  * More details here
  * Primarily mentoring QA tasks
 * Advent of Code
  * 25 days of Christmas coding "mission", for lack of a better word
  * Although I am behind, I will continue after Christmas is over, if it is still up
  * Website is here
  * wxl's Advent of Code completions are on Github here

Completed
 * masspackagelp
  * A python script that allows for mass adding of bug subscriptions to a Launchpad team
 * Syntax cleanup of wisconsinlinux.org

I have had the joy of working as a mentor to Simon since his introduction to the Ubuntu community. He has been incredibly engaged and excited. He is well-organized, keeps focus, but is always exploring new avenues to contribute. Among his regular contributions, he has managed to breathe new life into his !LoCo, has been incredibly useful to the Lubuntu Team, working hand in hand with me and other team members, and has consistently contributed to Ubuntu News. Simon is a young man and his sometimes displayed a certain lack of professionalism (albeit rarely). Though this is to be expected to some degree, my observation has been that he has resiliently responded to the criticism he has been given. This is a hallmark of maturity I think many of his peers lack. I would also comment on his care for others. He has shown me many a thing that relates to my own interests, simply for the joy of making me happy. I think this is a sign of a good mentor/mentee relationship. I trust that Simon will continue to grow and will continue to make Ubuntu better. -- LaunchpadHome:wxl <<DateTime(2016-01-30T22:21:35Z)>>
Line 136: Line 62:
Simon appears to have a decent work ethic when it comes to working with things that pique his attention, and work contributed from what I have seen appears to be reasonably good. However, I've noticed on several different occasions his attitude is not conducive for that of reasonable discourse, or reasonable community collaboration efforts, and from my perspective, sometimes Simon is very rude to others in public discussion channels. There are also other issues in his attitude which in my opinion detract from his overall 'image'. I also believe that Simon has not shown a "significant and sustained" contribution per the definition of membership, partly because he has only been using Ubuntu and involved in the Ubuntu / Lubuntu projects for only 9 months. I therefore do not support his application for Ubuntu Membership, and I believe his application should be rejected at this time - there is more to Ubuntu Membership than contributions, it also requires one to handle themselves well in the community. -Thomas Ward on November 30, 2015 My last testimonial written here, now erased, was in November of 2015. From then to now, I have noticed a substantial shift in Simon's attitude towards others and the community. I have observed that he is handling himself in a far more professional manner, and has taken great strides to work well with others in the teams and tasks he's focused on. I have also personally observed his interactions with others with regards to QA, and believe he has made exceptional strides. He's made a substantial amount of contributions, and appears to make more each and every day. I think that, while Simon has some ways to go, he would be a good candidate for Ubuntu membership, provided that he continues to act in a professional manner and have positive interactions within the community. -- LaunchpadHome:teward <<DateTime(2016-01-30T18:01:20-0500)>>
Line 138: Line 64:
On a good day, Simon's work is good. However his interpersonal skills are sadly lacking. This is not unusual with a boy of his age, but he has managed to get that many complaints that he has been banned from the linux padawan general IRC channel. Whilst we have no procedure to kick off a padawan, his interactions with other people may now only take place on the official irc area and by email. I'm sure that in some 6 months time his interpersonal skills will have improved to the level that several of us will whole heartedly support his application for full ubuntu membership. However, as Thomas stated above, the time is not now. -phillw on November 30, 2015 Simon revived the LoCo in summer 2015 with my help and has served as the mentor for many tasks I completed in Google Code-in 2015. I've been cooperating with Simon for a while. He's proved being a very smart and adaptative guy. Despite his age, Simon is a really useful guy, having a deep knowledge of coding, bug hunting and ISO testing. Simon has been a wonderful help to QA and an active participant in the greater community whenever there's an opportunity. I appreciate his willingness to help out with GCI, the manual tests project, and image testing. I support his application for membership.

I have only had contact with Simon in regard to community QA and the Manual Testcase project. As others have noted, in the past there were times when his professionalism might have appeared to let him down - I've seen no recurrence of that for some time now and enjoy working with him when our paths cross - which they do, frequently. In particular his work with students during the recent GCI on the QA tracker tasks was well received. His enthusiasm for pushing the QA trackers/manual testcase project is commendable. I see no reason why he shouldn't be an Ubuntu Member and support his application. --LaunchpadHome:flocculant <<DateTime(2016-02-03T07:31:08)>>

Simon has grown a lot in the past few months and is showing great enthusiasm and passion for what he's doing. I'm glad to see that Simon took my advice and has now been granted an Ubuntu Membership. My only fear is that he wants to contribute to such an extent that others might think that their contributions are no longer required. I think "over-achieving" is the phrase that is currently in use.

Simon could be well one of Ubuntu's future leaders but he does need to appreciate that sometimes holding back (for a while at least) and letting others contribute is the way to go. --LaunchpadHome:PaulW2U - <<DateTime(2016-03-06T12:33:33)>>

Simon has been a lovely addition to our Kubuntu packaging team. His enthusiasm, skill and willingness to do the boring but necessary work have enlivened all of us working with him. His work in Debian getting Qt``Web``Engine out the door was of particular note, as it will allow us to continue to offer KDE PIM to our users. In the relatively short time Simon has been contributing to Kubuntu directly, his boundless enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck in has already had a significant impact on the project's progress. While that energy could at times perhaps be directed a little better, that is a small matter compared to the greater picture, and will certainly come with time. Simon will no doubt go very far in Kubuntu or any project he decides he wishes to take on and progress with. Should he apply for Kubuntu membership - only a matter of time I'm sure - I would wholeheartedly recommend that he is accepted. -- LaunchpadHome:acheron <<DateTime(2016-09-18T17:07:09Z)>>

Simon generously gives his time to many projects throughout Ubuntu (as can be seen from the testimonials above) and Ubuntu MATE has found a great collaborator and friend in Simon. Simon regularly volunteers to assist the opt-in Ubuntu flavour releases for the alphas and early betas. More recently Simon has been assisting Ubuntu MATE by completing SRUs that close significant bugs affecting all desktop environments using GTK and GVFS. Most notable was landing CVE fixes for many vulnerabilities in VLC across several supported Ubuntu releases.
