What do I use Ubuntu for? Well, on my IBM X31 thinkpad, Ubuntu Hoary is the desktop OS I use. In my work, I write documentation, so OpenOffice and other editors (emacs, vim) needs to work. I use latex for various things. Evolution is my graphical mail client, while on the console, mutt is the preferred choice. I write perl, so a fair few perl libraries etc is usually installed for me, I compile my own kernels (sorry, but the Ubuntu ones doesn't do what I want them to) so all the tools that go with that is installed. | What do I use Kubuntu for? * Development - I write a fair bit of perl, shell-script etc. * Writing - documentation, letters, business correspondance. * Entertainment - I play chess and NeverWinter Nights. * Miscellaneous - browsing the web, mail, IRC, jabber and so on. |

I am a QA engineer, but also a SysAdm, so I have a reasonably good clue to how the system works. If there is something that doesn't work, I tinker with it until it does or I get stuck and I have to ask if someone else knows the answer. Hi there,
I work for McAfee as a QA Engineer. I started using Ubuntu with Hoary since about three or four months before it went stable, then I moved to Breezy and now I am doing some testing of Dapper. Before that I have been using Debian in a bastardised mix of Sarge, Sid and Experimental. Going back further I have used RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Gentoo, TurboLinux and ROCK Linux.
What do I use Kubuntu for?
- Development - I write a fair bit of perl, shell-script etc.
- Writing - documentation, letters, business correspondance.
Entertainment - I play chess and NeverWinter Nights.
- Miscellaneous - browsing the web, mail, IRC, jabber and so on.
What hardware?
Breezy is installed on my workstation at home, a Sempron box, Asus A7V600. It runs various services for me and my family.
- Breezy is also installed on my two workstations at work, and on various test kit.
- My IBM X31 will be used for testing of installs, upgrades etc.
What software?
Office Stuff - OpenOffice, KOffice, GNumeric
- Editors - vim, emacs, Kate
- Mail - KMail, Opera, mutt
Web - Opera, FireFox, Epiphany, Konqueror
- more to be added
I am a QA engineer, but also a SysAdm, so I have a reasonably good clue to how the system works. If there is something that doesn't work, I tinker with it until it does or I get stuck and I have to ask if someone else knows the answer. I have had a look at Dapper already on a couple of worker-boxes I make use of and I am working on a totally automated install. I add stuff to my personal Wiki (http://lenin.trudheim.com/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Trudheim/WebHome) for stuff I tinker with.
For further details, mail me and I will answer any, well - most, questions you may have.
