There is a great deal of support for including binary drivers in Ubuntu (to make things work), and against them (to remain free). I was strongly in the latter camp and even signed the other petition (and see EthicalUbuntu) until I read this article:

It is long but persuasive. In essence, it says that if we (Linux/Ubuntu) don't provide a credible 64 bit platform before everyone is on 64 bit, then we will be out of the picture for a generation. The argument is by analogy to what happened with the 8 to 16, and 16 to 32 bit transitions.
