Type "sudo nano /etc/modules" in terminal, then add "snd-sbawe" at a separate line, save, quite, restart. For 8.10- additionally add user (here x) to group audio by "sudo adduser x audio" and reboot.

Latest alsa-driver required for Hoary ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/ I had to boot with "irqpoll" to prevent a conflict with my videocard. The Microphone now works "By default" in the Lates Build of Dapper
