Hardy Alpha 6

Sound and microphone works! It's muted by default so don't forget to turn the volume up! Live CD default resolution is still big. ([https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/182778 bug]) Seems like there's gonna be a tool to set the resolution that actually can change the resolution. It still can't change it thou. I don't think we're gonna have 3D acceleration enabled in Hardy. The Openchrome driver still doesn't support it. I know nothing about the wifi support in Hardy. Maybe the new kernel will fix that problem too?

Hardy Alpha 4

Startup resolution is still 1920*1200, still no sound. The network config tool works. We have a new background too.. Smile :)

Update: It looks like the sound problem is getting fixed slowly. It works with the latest alsa driver and most likely it will be included in Hardy. However, there's still problem with it: only noise is coming from the right channel. You can mute it but if you're using headphones it's bad to have only mono sound.

Hardy Alpha 3

The Live CD stats with no problem, the resolution of the screen is set to 1280x800 but only 2/3 of the screen fits in because the real resolution is somewhat bigger. I wasn't able to change the resolution during the live session. There is still no sound from the speaker, only a very quiet voice from the headphone. Another big problem, that I could not set up my internet connection! There must be something wrong with the new network gui program or maybe with the new kernel!?

Gutsy

Gutsy won't install on this laptop at all because the x server can't start, not even in safe mode. However I was able to install and update Gutsy Tribe 5 with no problems. It is also possible to install 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' at the live cd before install and set the resolution to 1280x800 and then a startx. After the installation the proper resolution can only be set by issuing the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" command because the screen and graphics menu doesn't work properly. 3D graphics is not supported because the openchrome driver is still under in the early stage of development, but the vesa driver can display proper resolution and play movies. The sound problem is partly resolved, because the speaker still doesn't make any sound but at least the headphones can produce low volume of sound (with ALSA drivers). Latest OSS drivers (http://www.opensound.com/oss.html) works perfectly. However a secondary monitor/beamer doesn't show anything. The brightness adjustment buttons do not work always properly.

Feisty

X starts but not with the correct resolution. During the installation the window is too big so its bottom doesn't fit in the screen. I had to push the buttons blindly and used the tab key to navigate. There is no 3D acceleration and there is no sound. WLAN doesn't work automatically but this problem can be fixed. Ubuntu doesn't like this laptop.

Problematic hardware:

  • Video card: VIA VN896 Chrome9 HC
  • Sound card: VIA HD Audio Codec VT8237A
  • WLAN: sis163u

Notes

I'll write how to fix the hardware problems when I'll find a solution for them. Until then check the forum of this laptop: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=514080
