NEW Games
This tries to give an overview of games, which are not in ubuntu yet. Perhaps you can help the [:MOTUGames] Team to bring them into universe?
How to adopt a game
If you find a game in the list below you want to have in universe, you could try to get it packaged. Please first look around in the web, if someone already did it. In that case, please add a link to this wiki page. If you created a source package for the game, please add it on [:MOTUNewPackages] and contact a Member of the [:MOTUGames]Team.
Please note that not every game is distributable. We can only include games to ubuntu, which are freely redistributable. This restriction excludes commercial games like Doom, Quake, and similar.
The Debian Wiki has analysis of some games, explaining why they cannot be included into debian and/or ubuntu: http://wiki.debian.org/QualityGamesUnsuitableForDebian. Perhaps we could distribute them in the multiverse component of ubuntu, but this would require additional analysis. Feel free to start a wiki page documenting your investigations.
Help Needed!
This page needs your help. It has currently grown very long, and there are obviously some entries which should be moved out of this list. If you want to help the [:MOTUGames] team, Please help is to triage the next section. Use the following template for each game entry (this was taken from http://wiki.debian.org/ProspectiveGamesInDebian):
Game name - template
Home page: [http:// Home page link]
- License: License name and/or link to license text
Download page: [http:// url to download page]
- Description: (The best game template ever)
- Notes: (special requirements or dependencies not in ubuntu [yet])
Please note that the licence is important. Many games use different licenses for the game engine and artwork, this is also important for packagers and consideration for inclusion into the archive.
Debian has done some research about games which are unsuitable for packaging, you may use this research for triaging the list of packages below: http://wiki.debian.org/QualityGamesUnsuitableForDebian
New games currently not in Ubuntu
Danger from the deep (dangerdeep) [http://dangerdeep.sourceforge.net/] ([http://gmail-notify.sourceforge.net/download.php Debian package available], but doesn't work correctly with Ubuntu)
Glest [http://www.glest.org/]
Crown & Cutlass [http://crownandcutlass.sourceforge.net/]
- FTBFS - this is due to some very dumb coding on the part of upstream
OpenBubbles [http://www.freewebs.com/lasindi/openbubbles/]
Built and tested on Breezy, runs (sound issues) - CoreyBurger is building package
S.C.O.U.R.G.E [http://scourge.sourceforge.net/]
Gnome War Pad [http://gwp.lunix.com.ar/index.php]
- Upstream has .debs, we should get the sources from them
- Should be entering debian soon
Secret Maryo Chronicles [http://smclone.sourceforge.net/]
I([JonDodson]) have built this for hoary, no issues. Game released under the LGPL, GPL and Creative Commons license(s). The game art is all original, albiet VERY similar to Super Mario World(however, slightly different).
Bub & Bob Brothers [http://bub-n-bros.sourceforge.net/]
This Bubble Bobble clone is great! Relies on Python, tested and works in hoary([JonDodson]). Mit License.
Nexuiz [http://www.nexuiz.com/]
- GPL Quake source engine with free textures. I have tested this game on Ubuntu Hoary and it works great. Sources are included in the main zip file. Someone should add this game to the Debian archives for inclusion into Ubuntus next release. This game is a amazing GPL/Free game!
Ultimate Stunts [http://www.ultimatestunts.nl/]
Packaging in progress by MattGalvin, working out some bugs with upstream
IGE - Outer Space [http://www.ospace.net/index.en.html]
Dark Oberon [http://dark-oberon.sourceforge.net/]
Compiled this game(JonDodson). Graphics are really well done. They use a make script and some OpenGL libraries that are not that standard. However, the game is very well done.
Vulture's Eye [http://www.darkarts.co.za/projects/vultures/] - The successor of falcon's eye.
Quake III / Open Arena [http://www.planetgargoyle.com/openarena/] (broken); [http://cheapy.deathmask.net/]
Warzone 2100 GPL [http://warzone.berlios.de/index.php/Main_Page]
- redevelopment of the commercial Warzone2100 game, so everything is pretty complete and balanced
Free Orion [http://freeorion.org/index.php/Main_Page]
- an open-source, platform independant galactic conquest game in the tradition of the Master of Orion games. Code is under GPL and graphics are released under Creative Commons/ShareAlike 2.0. Still in development but playable as of version 0.3
Digital Paintball 2 [http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/files.html]
Warsow [http://www.warsow.net/?p=news]
Open Quartz
Home page: [http://openquartz.sourceforge.net/]
- License: GPL
Download page: [http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1760]
- Description: GPL media files to use with the GPL'd version of Quake. This is effectively a project to make a fully GPL Quake distribution.
- Notes: Not sure how far along this is
Brand new games with potential
Qonk [http://anthony.liekens.net/index.php/Computers/Qonk]
- Really nice in its simplicity
TA Spring [http://taspring.clan-sy.com/] [http://taspring-linux.berlios.de/]
- Redevelopment of the commercial Total Annihilation game, so everything is pretty complete.
Join channel #taspring on FreeNode or channel #sy on QuakeNet for more info.
- Multiplatform multiplayer needs love (sync problems). It is playable if you manage to get a cluster of identical linux boxes and play with the same binary on every box.
There are some unofficial debian packages in progress. I (TobiVollebregt) actually have a bzipped debian dir in my e-mail box, which I still need to check out...

- Currently requires media files from original game

- Engine is GPL, content is not.
Attempt to create free (gpl) content: [http://www.planetgargoyle.com/openarena/]
There is ongoing work to package this for debian: http://bugs.debian.org/324179
Graphics for non-existant games
Only rarely do artists produce graphics before a game. Nicu (of Planet.ocal) has created art for a mr potato head game, but needs a gnome programmer. [http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/2005/05/one-potato-two-potatos.html Blog entry]
Games where the developers have called for help
The games listed here have a working and playable version already, just need polishing
Gtetrinet [http://gtetrinet.sourceforge.net/]
Gnome-mud [http://amcl.sourceforge.net/]
The call for both of the above was made here: [http://oskuro.net/blog/freesoftware/gtetrinet-gnomemud-releases-2005-05-12-18-33 Blog Entry]
Xconq [http://www.xconq.org/] The call was made here: [http://happypenguin.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1788 Linux Game Tome forum post]
