About Me

My name is Matt Fischer and I've been an Ubuntu user for about 15 years now. I've used Slackware (installed from floppies), Red Hat, Debian, and became an Ubuntu convert about 4 years ago, using it at work and home. Now that I work at Canonical, I can devote time during work and personal hours to making Ubuntu better.

My long term goal is to become an Ubuntu Member.

On My Own Time

  • Working assorted bugs in gnome-nettools (#841007, #806606, #891852, #389153). Fix sent upstream and accepted, will be merged back in Precise. Also fixed #661753 in oneiric (patch doesn't make sense upstream).

  • Joined the Ubuntu Bug Squad and worked on helping to triage bugs. Focusing on gnome-netools and misc bugs.

  • Adopted gnome-nettool for Bug triage (Adopted Package list).

  • Patched an indicator-weather issue #928596

  • Triaged and patched a simple unity issue #932212

  • Wrote a very basic lightdm.conf manpage #883189

Future Goals

  • Join Ubuntu Bug Control.
    • Example bugs
      • 189852 - ancient bug that needed to find the right package, worked with the submitter to figure out where it belonged
      • 468778 - old bug with no project/package, but it sounded serious. confirmed and then triaged the issue by running some experiments. Tracked down the owner via IRC and discussed it with them and they are now working it.
      • 893944 - since it appeared to be fixed in oneiric, I dug through releases and changelogs and determined it was fixed earlier, but I found no changelog entry unfortunately.
      • 188617 - no beep on ping: diagnosed the issue in the code, discussed with upstream and duped the bug as a result. Also linked my findings to a similar bug in xchat to help them out.
      • 800027 - memleak in gworldclock: triaged the bug and then confirmed it. sent it upstream to debian and discussed it with the upstream author.
      • 890886 - system-config-samba needs root password, normally unavailable. The reporter mentioned two issues in this bug. The first issue I was able to confirm had already been fixed by a patch, and the second issue was already covered in a duplicate bug. I responded to him with this info and waited for his response.

  • Continue doing maintenance for gnome-nettool in order to fix more problems and increase my knowledge of the GTK. If possible, become maintainer of this project.
