Ubuntu is a growing entity: In NZ, although there are a lot of Linux users - and very possibly a fiar number of Ubuntu users - there's no place to meet, get local help, and organise advocacy. Ever since the birth of computers, enthusiasts and fans around the world have collected together in garages, universities and pubs to talk about their interest, learn from each other and help promote their interest. Combine this with the huge popularity of Ubuntu, and you get the Ubuntu Local Community (LoCo) project.

The reason for NZ team is to try to change that, our initial aim is to get as many members as possible, as soon as we can, and have an 'Ubuntu Party' as close as possible to the release date of Ubuntu 6.06 - The Dapper Drake. The Dapper Party will probably be held in Auckland (just because there're lots of peope) and will be a great oppertunity to spread the word, get systems up and running, hand out CD's, and demo the wonderful operating system that is Ubuntu. A LoCo team is formed to help groups of Ubuntu fans and enthusiasts in a particular region to help advocate, promote, translate, develop and otherwise improve Ubuntu.

=== Long Term Goals: === With the support of JonoBacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager, and the awesome AustralianTeam, we're launching a New Zealand team for Ubuntu (http://ubuntu-nz.org/).
Line 11: Line 11:
 * To provide local support to both people and companies who want to use Ubuntu in NZ
 * To provide local install support for people wanting to move to Ubuntu
 * To spread the word about Ubuntu, give out CD's, and get people using them
 * To organise meetings to review the state of the team, and find new ways the further the spread of Ubuntu
=== What's involved? ===
Line 16: Line 13:
---- What would you like to be involved? Activities other teams have engaged in include, but are not limited to:

 * development & coaching new, interested contributors
 * regional customisation
 * translations
 * advocacy, both virtually and locally
 * CD & merchandise distribution
 * IRC support (or just hanging out)

There are no set goals for the team yet - it's entirely up to you, the new members, to decide as a group what we should do. There are many, many ways to ContributeToUbuntu!

Involvement in a LoCo is an easy way to get involved with the global Ubuntu community for non-developers and developers alike. There are people involved from many teams within Ubuntu who can help you gain useful skills for further involvement if you are keen!
