Simple to use, xvidcap has been around for some time now, and the good news is that development has recently had a surge of activity. Xvidcap supports a very wide range of file formats and video & audio codecs.
Installation
xvidcap is not available in the standard repositories but is available as a .deb from the sourceforge home page. This can be installed using gdebi or dpkg.
Xvidcap requires liblame0 from the multiverse repository to be installed as a pre-requisite.
Once installed xvidcap can be found on the main Ubuntu menu under Applications --> Sound & Video.
Recording
xvidcap can record the contents of any currently open window. Alternatively it can be used to record a region of the desktop.
Tips: Detach selection frame (padlock icon) then use the pipette to choose a window to record.
