I can not boot from my cd-drive
Installing Ubuntu requires the computer to be booted from the Ubuntu CD. However, sometimes you'll experience problems booting from the CDROM drive.

This can be caused by many factors, such as using an old computer with a BIOS that doesn't support booting from CDROM, a flakey CDROM drive, etc.

If you experience such problems when trying to install Ubuntu, please follow these steps:

  1. Download [http://slackware.at/data/slackware-current/rootdisks/sbootmgr.dsk Smart Boot Manager]. (for more information about this, [http://linux.simple.be/tools/sbm click here].)

  2. Now we need to make a boot floppy. To do this, use a utility called [http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwritewin-0.7.zip rawwrite]. (for more info about this, [http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite.htm click here].)

  3. Once the boot floppy is created, start the computer.
  4. Make sure your computer's BIOS has been set so the computer boots from the floppy disk - for instructions on how to accomplish this, please refer to your computer's documentation.
  5. Insert the floppy and Ubuntu CD, and check that the computer indeed boots from the floppy.
  6. When the Smart Boot Manager's menu appears, choose the menu option with "CDROM" in it, and press Enter.
  7. Congratulations - your computer will now boot from the Ubuntu CD. Now it will start installing Ubuntu Linux.

Hopefully, this helps someone out there.

Warning /!\ Warning SBM is not compatible with parted if installed on harddisk MBR. Parted may detect wrong partition information!
