Smart Boot Manager

I can not boot from my cd-drive
Installing Ubuntu requires the computer to be booted from the Ubuntu CD. However, sometimes you'll experience problems booting from the CDROM drive.

This can be caused by many factors, such as using an old computer with a BIOS that doesn't support booting from CDROM, a flakey CDROM drive, etc.

If you experience such problems when trying to install Ubuntu, please follow these steps:

  1. Smart Boot Manager is on the Breezy install CD, in the /install folder. Otherwise, you can [http://slackware.at/data/slackware-current/rootdisks/sbootmgr.dsk download] it. (for more information about this, [http://linux.simple.be/tools/sbm click here].)

  2. Now we need to make a boot floppy. To do this, use a utility called [http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwritewin-0.7.zip rawwrite]. (for more info about this, [http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite.htm click here].)

  3. First format the floppy. In windows, open dos prompt and type c:\> format a:

  4. Then use rawrite command: rawrite -f sbootmgr.dsk
  5. Once the boot floppy is created, start the computer.
  6. Make sure your computer's BIOS has been set so the computer boots from the floppy disk - for instructions on how to accomplish this, please refer to your computer's documentation.
  7. Insert the floppy and Ubuntu CD, and check that the computer indeed boots from the floppy.
  8. When the Smart Boot Manager's menu appears, choose the menu option with "CDROM" in it, and press Enter. (don't think you need to install SBM to the HD - you can, but you don't need to.)
  9. Congratulations - your computer will now boot from the Ubuntu CD. Now it will start installing Ubuntu Linux.

Hopefully, this helps someone out there.

Warning /!\ Warning SBM is not compatible with parted if installed on harddisk MBR. Parted may detect wrong partition information!

Q&A

But what to do on a PC where SMB does not recognize my SCSI drive?

SBM also does not appear to recognize external USB cdrom drives... EricBaenen
