Legacy link
Due to the original wiki using CamelCase and not having a separate user namespace, this page exists to catch legacy links and redirect to the appropriate namespace and title convention. Jonathan-ferguson (talk) 06:19, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks Jonathan. I have a three questions:
- How many pages do you expect to do this for? Because by redirecting to your user space you are populating the search in the main namespace with entries to your personal user space. That is not how the MediaWiki search is supposed to work and if it is done enough times by enough people it will make the search experience worse for most users. Imagine I am searching for Shotcut. As I type "Sh", instead of immediately seeing Shotcut in the results, I get User:Shane/MyNotes, User:Sharon/DaVinci, User:Shona/TestTest123, and so on. If I go to Special:Search and search for "Shotcut", I then get User:Joe/ShotcutNotes, User:Fred/ShotcutReview, and so on.
- What legacy links are you referring to? Are you referring to links that you have written yourself or links that others have written?? Because if these are personal wiki pages/notes, I wouldn't expect them to be heavily linked from external sites (correct me if I'm wrong). We have access to some analytics and we are not seeing a significant incidences of 404s for any URLs associated with individual users from the old wiki.
- (related but slightly different) If we are surfacing pages under your personal pages in the main namespace (currently User:Jonathan-ferguson/NTP appears in the main search), is there any reason why the pages couldn't become standalone pages in the main namespace (without your name as the parent)? For example, Minimize hierarchy in NTP with multicast?? If it is going to be surfaced in the main search, then why is it under user space???
- While I understand that the old wiki had different conventions, and underlying technology, it also became difficult to search and use over time because people were moving in a hundred different directions. So we need to strike a balance here, between migrating the things that people want and avoiding disorganization, including in search results.
- It does not seem sustainable that any user can redirect to their user space from the main namespace without harming the search experience for everyone. It makes sense to do redirects for specific critical pages. For example, DebuggingSecurity (CamelCase) redirects to Security/Debugging because that page was used as official documentation by users reporting security bugs and there is no criss-crossing of namespaces. I think it will become extremely messy if many people try to create redirects between namespaces. Shanecrowley (talk) 08:23, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Shane,
- This NTP article is my sole document which is up to date from the previous wiki instance.
- The applicability to others for NTP needing to be altered is very narrow, considering that the present default in Ubuntu is chrony, and that the majority of people do not presently have access to the multicast Internet. The need for this article is a workaround for the misinformation and scaremongering behind ntpsec, which Ubuntu has been inflicted with.
- In this era it is easy to have AI show the instructions and specify factual references. Despite AI, the official documentation specifying the Network Time Protocol as a protocol is easy to find, just as the original software implementation is. The crux is that Ubuntu dropped ntpd because of ideology.
- If someone was not using Ubuntu and instead their choice of distribution included NTP, then they could simply read the manual for their corresponding version.
- Due to AI there is very little reason to duplicate content from the official technology documents and programme manuals in a third party wiki. The importance of a wiki to me, is to read how someone else is doing it. Jonathan-ferguson (talk) 12:14, 3 October 2026 (UTC)
