Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) alpha-1 released!

On June 26th Stéphane Graber, on behalf of the release team, announces the availability of Ubuntu 14.04 (Utopic Unicorn) alpha one for the following Ubuntu flavors: Kubuntu, Lubuntu Ubuntu GNOME, UbuntuKylin and the Ubuntu Cloud. He shares released notes for each flavor and also writes: “While these Alpha 1 images have been tested and work, except as noted in the release notes, Ubuntu developers are continuing to improve the Utopic Unicorn.”

Making it easier for LoCos to share news/stories

Daniel Holbach presents a proposal to make it easier for Lo’’Cos to share their news and stories by way of adding functionality to the LoCo Team Portal which will then feed the stories to Planet Ubuntu. In this post he shares the current mini-spec for the plan and asks for help from designers, Django developers and anyone who wishes to get involved.

FOSSETCON in Florida – Coming Next September!

José Antonio Rey shares news that the upcoming FOSSETCON in Orlando, Florida in September will be hosting an Ubucon on “Day 0” of the conference and will have an Ubuntu booth at the main conference where he will be helping to represent Ubuntu.

Adam Stokes: Ubuntu Openstack Installer

Adam Stokes presents the community with yet another option for installing OpenStack, the Ubuntu Openstack Installer available via PPA from the Cloud Installer project in Launchpad (https://launchpad.net/cloud-installer). He gives instructions for how to use this installer, and goes over the basics of what it’s doing with Juju to accomplish a single-machine install of OpenStack.

Ubuntu GNOME: Acting Team Leader & HR Sub-Team

Ali Linx of the Ubuntu GNOME team announces a couple of organizational changes to the team. First that each sub-team in the project will have a leader and acting leader to handle leadership tasks of the main leader is unavailable, and secondly the creation of a Human Resource sub-team focusing on recruitment of volunteers for the project.

Lubuntu: LXQt now has “full” Qt5 support

The Lubuntu team reposts a blog post from the LXDE blog announcing that the latest source code in our git repository can be compiled with Qt5 which they’re working to fix bugs in and notes that Qt4 will still be supported.

The Fridge: Community Donations Funding Report, Q1 2014

Michael Hall, on behalf of the Ubuntu Community team at Canonical, shares community funding details from the first quarter of 2014. During this time over $17,000 was distributed to the community for events and equipment related to Ubuntu development and promotion.

Svetlana Belkin: Doc Team Wiki Page Clean Up

Svetlana Belkin reports on progress on cleanup of the Ubuntu Documentation Team wiki, writing: “We have cleaned it up by removing some of the unwanted sub-pages, rewrote some of the pages to make it easier for new people to get involved with us, and much more.”

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: 100,000 App Downloads

Michael Hall announces: “It was less than a month that we announced crossing the 10,000 users milestone for Ubuntu phones and tablets, and we’ve already reached another: 100,000 app downloads!” He goes on to share statistics about the downloads, explains that all these downloads are from folks who have installed Ubuntu themselves (since no consumer version has been released yet) and reminds the community that they’re continuing to build the app development community through their Pioneers program.
