FOSSCON 2014 Sat August 9th Philadelphia
Jim Fisher of the Pennsylvania LoCo announces the upcoming Fosscon event in Philadelphia. The event will include representation from the local hackerspaces, a hackathon, Amateur Radio License Testing, workshops, talks and an installfest put on by the Pennsylvania LoCo team.

Ubuntu OpenStack on an Orange Box, Live Demo at the Cloud Austin Meetup, August 19th
Dustin Kirkland announces that he’ll be presenting Orange Box on August 19th at Rackspace in Austin. He will use it to “ to deploy Hadoop, scale it up, run a terasort, destroy it, deploy OpenStack, launch instances, and destroy it too. I'll talk about the hardware (the Orange Box, Intel NUCs, Managed VLAN switch), as well as the software (Ubuntu, OpenStack, MAAS,Juju, Hadoop) that makes all of this work in 30 minutes or less!”

Ubuntu Openstack Installer – upcoming ui enhancements
Adam Stokes shares screenshots of some of the upcoming UI enhancements in the next release of the Ubuntu OpenStack Installer. Enhancements include improved feedback during installation, changes to how deployments are shown and a help screen “to provide more insight into the installer.”

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: A faster Ubuntu positioning system with Nokia HERE
An agreement with Nokia HERE allows Ubuntu to get faster positioning inside apps than raw GPS would allow. With explicit consent, anonymous data will be contributed to crowd-sourcing location services. The system will be run under confinement, so that the service and data can’t be used without the user explicitly granting access to them.

Ubuntu Scientists: Backport spyder 2.3 to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Ghislain Vaillant proposes a backport of spyder 2.3 which includes Python 3 support has been proposed for the Ubuntu 14.04 release and asks the community for support.

Harald Sitter: Kubuntu Testing and You
Harald Sitter introduces some basic testcases for the Kubuntu desktop. These tests are designed so that any user can run them “to ensure that core functionality such as instant messaging and playing MP3 files is working as expected.” Harald continues: “All tests are meant to take no more than 10 minutes and should be doable by just about everyone.”

5 Things to Do After Upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04
The Xubuntu team presents 5 tasks that users can do after upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 to “get closer to the default setup of Xubuntu 14.04.” Tasks include: Removal of xscreensaver in favor of Light Locker, replacement of alacarte with MenuLibre, removal of gThumb, default of Whiskermenu and a reminder to check and re-enable PPAs post upgrade, since they would have been disabled as part of the upgrade.

Sally Radwan announces a whitepaper co-authored by Canonical and Dell which shows “how to easily deploy cloud services on a single Dell PowerEdge server or a laptop” to illustrate “how easily you can take the cloud with you using Linux containers, virtualization and Juju orchestration software from Canonical.”
Nokia HERE maps coming to Ubuntu
Nokia HERE has been selected to provide Ubuntu mobile devices with enhanced positioning capabilities using A-GPS and WiFi signals. The solution will also be available to application developers using Ubuntu OS on their own hardware.

Bukwang Pharmaceuticals cut IT costs and created business value with Ubuntu
South Korean company Bukwang Pharmaceuticals migrates off XP when it goes end of life and onto Ubuntu. In addition to cost savings, ease of deployment, and good interoperability, they were able to launch a new business unit specializing in open source solutions for Korean businesses.

A year without Windows and a new love of Linux
Alan Stainer writes for Mid Sussex Times about his year-long journey to move from Windows to Ubuntu. He writes that after this year “I have become a Linux advocate and convert.” And goes on to share some of the ways he’s been able to use Linux full time, including leveraging of cloud-based tools, the discovery of equivalent programs and games provided by Valve via Steam.
