[BETA] New Cloud Image Finder
Ben Howard announces the beta release of the Cloud Image Finder, a web page which shows where official Ubuntu images are available. He says that there is still work to be done, that only stable images are shown, and that any feedback is welcome.

Ubuntu OpenStack Charms: 15.01 release
James Page, on behalf of the Ubuntu Server team, announces the first interim release, 15.01, of charm features and fixes for the Ubuntu OpenStack charms for Juju. He highlights some of the charms that have been improved including, hacluster, ceph, nova-compute, ceilometer, and links to a list of closed bugs and the release notes.

Ubuntu Server and Cloud Survey reveals hybrid cloud, SDN and IoT on the rise
Canonical informs us that they ran their sixth annual Ubuntu Server and Cloud Survey at the end of 2014 with the aim of providing an overview of the enterprise cloud market, including emerging and changing trends, current challenges and technology preferences. They quote some figures about the usage of private and public clouds, and quote a source which says: "cloud computing, the Internet of Things and software defined infrastructure are among the top 10 trends of 2015."
Ubuntu 14.04 Azure Images now tracking the HWE kernel
Ben Howard writes that it was initially thought that the HWE (hardware enablement) kernel would not be needed or wanted in Virtual Cloud Instances. He says that the HWE kernel has now found its way into the Vagrant Cloud Images, VMware's vCHS, and Google's Compute engine as the default kernel for the Certified Images, and provides the commands to install it.

Kubuntu: Plasma 5.2 Released
The Kubuntu Team announce the release of Plasma 5.2 for Kubuntu 14.10 and and the development release. They tell us from where the packages can be downloaded, to where bugs should be reported, and that as Qt 5.4 is included, any Unity packages will be removed.

Riccardo Padovani: My opensource contributions in January 15
Riccardo Padovani looks back at what he did in January 2015 telling us that he worked on the Calculator reboot, the Browser app, reported all the bugs that he found while using his Ubuntu phone, wrote a patch for the Clock app and promoted some Ubuntu Italy activities. Dell offers new Ubuntu Linux workstation laptop
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols reports on how Dell will be offering new workstation laptops with Ubuntu 14.04 installed. Dell will be bringing Ubuntu to its Precision M3800 workstation laptop as well as the latest model of the Dell XPS 13.

Ghost in the Linux machine hits Debian, Red Hat and Ubuntu
Alfonso Maruccia of The Inquirer reports that the Linux kernel is affected by a security vulnerability in the GNU C Library (glibc) that can be bypassed by an email to gain access to a victim's computer. He says that researchers have nicknamed it Ghost as it can be triggered by GetHOST functions, that there was an effective fix for the bug in May 2013 but long-term Linux distros such as Ubuntu 12.04 are still exposed to the bug.
Seeing the cloud through Ubuntu-colored glasses
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet informs us that Ubuntu is the most popular operating system by more than two to one on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). He gives us some facts and figures regarding private and public clouds, and says "Whatever kind of cloud an organization adopts, Canonical discovered that there is a continued shift to running more mission-critical programs on the cloud."

Windows vs Linux: The 2015 Version
Matt Hartley of Datamation compares the installation processes of Windows 10 and Ubuntu, noting that both systems have fairly straightforward installers but if you wish to install both OSes on the same machine Windows must be installed first. He looks at the the desktops, privacy, security and hardware support, and in his conclusion says: "Ubuntu and other distros are ready for the desktop now."

Dell Unveils New High-End Ubuntu Linux Laptop
Christopher Tozzi, The VAR Guy, writes that Dell has has unveiled a new Precision M300 laptop as part of Project Sputnik, an initiative to create Ubuntu powered laptops with software designed for developers. He gives us a brief specification of the machine, which includes Ubuntu 14.04, informs us that the price is $1,533.50, and says that according to Dell, the laptop will be available worldwide.

Ubuntu 15.04 Is The Easy Path To Better Performance On Intel Broadwell
Michael Larabel of Phoronix gives us the results of some performance tests he made on Intel Broadwell hardware which reflect the differences between Ubuntu 14.10 and the current daily build of Ubuntu 15.04. In his conclusion he says: "For right now the main reason to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04 as an Intel Broadwell owner would be for the faster OpenGL graphics performance."

Ubuntu vs. Fedora Linux On Lenovo's X1 Carbon With Core i7 Broadwell
Michael Larabel of Phoronix compares the performance of Ubuntu 14.10 and 15.04 with Fedora 21 on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. In his conclusion he says: "Fedora 21 ran faster than Ubuntu in some graphics tests thanks to it already having a newer Mesa version and the shipping of new kernel versions as stable release updates. "
