Community Meetup at Copenhagen Roadmap Sprint

Monica Ayhens-Madon tells us "Canonical is getting back to in-person meetings”; the Product Roadmap Sprint being first on 2-6 May 2022 in Copenhagen. We're told right now it looks like a dinner on Monday 2 May at 6:30 CET will be the first community meetup, with a request that you get in touch if you 'd like to join, have a question, or can attend the event.

A jellyfish and a mainframe

Elizabeth Krumbach Joseph reports April has been an exciting month, first mentioning the release of IBM z16. We are given some links and a brief introduction to the zSystems class of mainframes, before Lyz mentions working with other open source projects; specifically mentioning openSUSE's Sarah Julia Kriesch. Many links are provided for more details on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on 'Big Iron', with Lyz focussing on sharing some key details on why we'd want to run Ubuntu 22.04 LTS if we were using IBM zSystems. Lyz includes some photos, one includes her hallmark: a Jammy Jellyfish plushie.

OpenStack Yoga for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Corey Bryant on behalf of the Ubuntu OpenStack Engineering team announces the release of OpenStack Yoga on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS via the Ubuntu Cloud Archive. A link is provided for details on the Yoga release, along with how to install it for each release, plus a short list of packages that updates exist for in the Ubuntu Cloud Archive. Canonical Expands Ubuntu Container Image Portfolio

Mike Vizard writes that "Canonical has added Grafana Loki, Apache Kafka and Apache Cassandra container images to the portfolio of images" as well as Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, which can be accessed via DockerHub. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS "adds support for cloud confidential computing on the Microsoft Azure cloud, a real-time kernel for Industrial applications" and more. Canonical's CEO Mark Shuttleworth has said Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will "cement the company's dominance of cloud computing", with assurances that critical security issues will get fixed within 24 hours on Long Term Support Docker Image Portfolio. "The overarching goal is to provide organizations with a set of container images that have been vetted", with it easier to replace the whole container than deal with patching flaws within it.

LXQt 1.1 Desktop Environment Officially Released, This Is What’s New

Marius Nestor reports on the release of LXQt 1.1 and notes it's "packed with lots of cool changes". We are given details of many of those changes, including some screen pictures to bring home some of those improvements. We are told LXQt is built against Qt 5.15, and provided a link to the release announcement page.

GNOME 42 Mutter Lands Fix For Using The Old "Radeon" Graphics Driver

Michael Larabel writes that there have been recent bug reports on GNOME Shell 42 about crashes with the Radeon DRM/KMS kernel driver. Michael reports the crashes at startup (or blank screens) should now be fixed with the latest Git code applied. He goes on to explain what the issue was, and provides a workaround for those still impacted by this issue.

Linux 5.15.35 Released With Important Performance Fix For Intel Alder Lake

Michael Larabel highlights the release of Linux 5.15.35 LTS kernel and includes a back-ported Intel P-Slate driver fix for Intel Alder Lake systems that provides better performance. The article goes on to benchmark these using a Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system.

Canonical Releases Important Ubuntu Kernel Update to Fix Eight Vulnerabilities

Marius Nestor alerts us to Canonical's release of important security updates for all supported releases of Ubuntu that address eight security vulnerabilities. Marius provides details of the CVE fixes, who discovered the flaws, and how they can be misused to exploit our systems. We are told what systems are impacted and the kernels that include the fixes.

Installed Ubuntu 22.04? Do These Things Next!

Joey Sneddon starts by describing Ubuntu 22.04 as "pretty perfect out-of-the-box", before going into a "few post-install tweaks" he thinks makes the experience better. Ubuntu 20.04 vs 22.04: What Has Changed Between the Two LTS Releases?

Ankush Dus in this article explores the differences between Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with GNOME 3.36 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with GNOME 42. We are given many screen pictures to clarify differences in this detailed post. Ankush makes the conclusion that "Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is certainly a major overhaul in terms of user experience".

Proton 7.0-2 Released For Getting More Windows Games Running On Steam Play

Michael Larabel tells us that Proton 7.0-2 is out "as the newest version of this Wine downstream that powers Valve's Steam Play for running games on Linux / SteamOS". We are told this "gets many more Windows games running well on Linux" and also provides many bug fixes. The article provides a list of games that are known to work well, and gives a link for the full list of changes found on GitHub.

Ubuntu Founder Explains Why Distro Won’t Support Flatpak

Joey Sneddon writes that in a recent "Q&A to celebrate the recent Ubuntu 22.04 release", Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth was asked if Ubuntu would consider shipping Flatpak support 'out of the box' by default. Mark gave an answer: "No". Mark outlined his reasoning, highlighting security and "integrity of execution", before adding that many developers & consumers prefer the "simplicity" of Snaps. Mark also acknowledged some areas where snaps need improvement. Joey notes the widening gap in package availability with Commercial and proprietary software, preferring Canonical's Snap store. However, many open-source software developers prefer Flatpak/Flathub, and that Ubuntu users can use Flatpak easily anyway.
