Call for nominations: Ubuntu Technical Board

Merlijn Sebrechts on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council makes the call for nominations to the Ubuntu Technical Board. We are reminded what the Ubuntu Technical Board is, and told the current board members terms expire "end of the year". Thus five people are required for the new board for a term of two years. Provided are the eligibility requirements, details of what is required - including links for more details, and how to apply. Submissions are open till 17 November 2022.

Lunar Lobster is now open for development

Graham Inggs announces Lunar Lobster is now open for development. A large influx to auto-sync is expected and help is requested "with fixing any breakage that occurs". The release schedule is provided and noted that Python 3.11, OpenJDK 17, and Perl 5.36 are supported with a "good number of packages in lunar-proposed that need fixing for these additions".

What You Should Know about the New OpenSSL Vulnerability

Ari Eitan reports that users of OpenSSL 3.0 will need to upgrade to 3.0.7 asap due to discovered flaws. We are told the fix was available on 1 November 2022. Ari provides a link to the originator’s announcement, along with other details - including a list of GNU/Linux distributions using impacted versions.

Linux world gains ability to repair exFAT drives

Liam Proven reminds us the FAT file-system is still needed. Liam relates the historical need to purchase a license to use it before a free open source means was available, and then Ubuntu users could mount exFAT partitions with the 5.4 linux kernel. We are told the "forthcoming version 1.2" of exfatprogs will include "a fsck.exfat command that can repair filesystem damage". We are reminded the tool already existed, but only reported damage in prior versions.

Add Notifications, Media Controls & Audio Streams to GNOME Quick Settings

Joey Sneddon reports a new GNOME extension allows you to "tweak the layout, appearance and functionality of the new Quick Settings menu in GNOME 43". Whilst readers may note this may be familiar given an article written by Joey only last week, with new add-ons there is more. Joey describes how it can be useful, giving examples plus screenshots, before noting you'll need Ubuntu 22.10 to make use of it.

Xfce’s Apps Update for October 2022: Thunar Gets More New Features Towards Xfce 4.18

Marius Nestor advises us that the developer focus is on the upcoming Xfce 4.18 release. Wherein Thunar file manager, xfce4-panel, and Windowck plugin received updates and new features. Marius provides a roadmap link to the "Schedule for and Status of the Xfce 4.18 Development Cycle" and tells us the relevant milestone dates.

LXQt 1.2 Desktop Environment Released with Initial Wayland Support, Various Improvements

Marius Nestor remarks that LXQt 1.2 is a major update, introducing initial support for the Wayland display server. Further noted are improvements and new features for the file manager, improvements in the QTerminal terminal emulator, additions to the LXQt Panel, updates to LXQt Power Management, and a note that there are various bug fixes. A link is provided for additional details with the advice that LXQt 1.2 should be available in the repo in the coming weeks.
