Brainstorming for a software security workshop

George-Andrei Iosif reminds us of the coming Ubuntu Summit, and a two-hour workshop on software security titled "The Open Source Fortress: Finding Vulnerabilities in Your Codebase Using Open Source Tools". We're asked in this thread for what we'd like to be presented in that workshop, with this thread open for ideas or concerns.

Mir Release 2.15.0

Michał Sawicz reports the release of Mir 2.15.0, with a link to the API documentation, a list of removals, an ABI summary, packaging changes, enhancements and bugs fixed. We're given links for more details, and told where we can download the source tarball, or access MIR PPAs.

LXD 5.17 has been released

Thomas Parrott reports the LXD team have released LXD 5.17. We're told this release includes three new features, and includes a focus on documentation improvements. A list of these features and highlights is provided, with links for more information, including download and how to use it on Linux, MacOS or Windows.

Call for testing: ubuntu-frame, mir-test-tools (Mir 2.15.0 update)

Michał Sawicz tells us the 22/candidate tracks of the mir-test-tools and ubuntu-frame snaps have been updated to Mir release 2.15.0. We're invited to help test these, and given the command to achieve this as well as being told to use our systems normally. Any results can be reported on this thread, with us being told the snaps will be promoted to 22/stable in a week if no problems are identified.

Ubuntu Desktop: Charting a course for the future

Oliver Smith updates us on the vision of Ubuntu Desktop with some details from some internal discussions on the future. A quick rundown is given on Ubuntu Desktops' place in the "wider OS landscape", then how many features are introduced in stages that appear in different release cycles, with the whole goal not visible until all stages are implemented. The post then continues with a list of values Ubuntu must meet: Choice, Quality, Support, Enjoyment, Performance, and more, with some details of what these mean in relation to Ubuntu Desktop. We're invited to leave feedback, join the community and contribute, or even apply to join the team.

Netplan v0.107 is now available

Lukas Märdian informs us of the release of Netplan 0.107 on GitHub, telling us it includes over 200 commits since the prior release from eight contributors. We're given highlights of this release, a changelog (with links to github pulls), and fixed bugs (again with links).

Budgie 10.8 Released

Joshua Strobl writes about the new budgie 10.8 release, which includes "improvements to Budgie Menu, adoption of StatusNotifier support in System Tray, Magpie v0.x support, and more". We're told this is the first release using the Magpie ABI, with a brief history of Budgie's past use of GNOME's mutter, and why the change is necessary. This release announcement highlights the many new features, includes some screenshots, and has a list of bug fixes, details of some code cleanups, and a list of contributors.

Linux 6.5-rc7 Released: Stable Linux 6.5 Expected Next Week

Michael Larabel informs us that Linus Torvalds has announced the release of Linux 6.5-rc7 test kernel. We are told what is included, which includes "clean-ups of the AMD Inception/SRSO mitigation code", "clean-up to the AMD Zen 1 divide-by-zero bug". We're told the Linux 6.5 stable release is expected on Sunday, with a link to the announcement provided.

Linux DRM Firmware Repo Established For Queuing New GPU Firmware

Michael Larabel writes about the linux-firmware-git Git repository, giving us some details of its use, before moving to the new DRM Firmware Repo on FreeDesktop.org GitLab which will be used as a "new staging repository for updated Direct Rendering (DRM) firmware". Michael notices that both Intel and AMD graphics drivers "appear committed to this new approach".

Gnome 45 Now in Beta, With New Camera and Image Apps

Corbin Davenport reminds us of GNOME's popularity, and of some of the features included in the last GNOME 44 release. The topic moves then to GNOME 45 and some of the changes, which includes removal of the Photos app.

Several HID Driver Improvements Ready For Linux 6.6

Michael Larabel writes about "a number of feature patches queued in HID-next" in the Linux 6.6 merge window. We're given details of these, sitting in the Human Interface Device subsystem queue, and the devices they're designed to aid, with links for more details.

LibreOffice 24.2 Will Succeed LibreOffice 7.6

Michael Larabel highlights that the current LibreOffice 7.6 will be replaced (in due course) by the next version which will be LibreOffice 24.2. We're told LibreOffice is moving to a year.month format, with the next 24.2 release due out in 2024-February.

Ubuntu 23.10’s New Development Wallpaper (Sunglasses Advised)

Joey Sneddon informs us that Ubuntu mantic (23.10) dailies now have a temporary wallpaper highlighting the development status of the release. A screenshot of it is provided (with a reminder of the lunar or 23.04 development wallpaper for comparison).

Ubuntu 23.10 Won't Be Shipping A GIMP 3.0 Snapshot

Michael Larabel writes that many were expecting Ubuntu 23.10 to ship with the GIMP 3.0 snapshot, alas we're told this won't happen with GIMP 2.10 now expected. We're reminded the GTK3 port has completed, but the release of Gimp 3.0.0 is still months into the future. Details and a link to Jeremy Bicha's proposal is included.

KDE Gear 23.08 Released with Lots of Goodies for Your Favorite KDE Apps

Marius Nestor tells us the KDE Project has released KDE Gear 23.08, which includes all default KDE applications shipped with the KDE Plasma desktop. Marius walks us through the upgrades we'll find in this new version for each app, before the summary that it's a "massive update".

Ubuntu Delays Transition To Snap'ed CUPS Print Server

Michael Larabel informs us that the plan "to replace the Debian-packaged CUPS with Snap-based CUPS for Ubuntu 23.10" has been pushed back to 2024. We're given some details of this change, and told it'll now take place in Ubuntu 24.10. A link to the Ubuntu community discourse post on this subject is provided.
