Redirects from user namespaces

Hello @Marius.quabeck. Thanks for logging in and creating a user page.

I noticed that you created a redirect to the main namespace (wiki.ubuntu.com/<page>) for your user profile. By convention, MediaWiki maintains a separation between the user namespace and the main namespace. You, or someone else, can find your profile by searching for User:<page>.

We would prefer to maintain this separation, because it will prevent the main namespace becoming cluttered with user profiles, when most people are searching for informational content (guides, references, etc.). This is less of a problem now, but could become more of an issue as the wiki grows.

When you have time, I would recommend that you migrate your profile page back to User:Marius.quabeck and remove the redirects.

We have set up a filter on the wiki to warn future users about putting user profiles in the main namespace --- sorry for not having that in place earlier. Shanecrowley (talk) 07:44, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Shanecrowley, thanks for explaining. I wanted to migrate my old profile, keep its lowercase URL if possible, and display my name as Marius.Quabeck.
The wiki treats User:marius.quabeck as the same title as User:Marius.quabeck, and the abuse filter blocked my DISPLAYTITLE attempt. I also didn’t want to use User:Marius.Quabeck, since that doesn’t match my account name. That’s why I moved the profile to the main namespace. I can’t delete the resulting redirects myself because deletion requires admin rights.
I understand your concern about user profiles in the main namespace. Is the best approach to move the page back to User:Marius.quabeck and have an admin remove both main namespace redirects? Or is keeping the old URL as a redirect acceptable?
Thanks,

Thanks for explaining Marius.
By default, MediaWiki imposes some constraints on profile names, but, in the grand scheme of things it's better to work within those constraints than against them. We looked into ways to customize usernames, and might do so again in future, but all the solutions we found were quite hacky.
For now, I would suggest you migrate it back to User:Marius.quabeck and use the default user page name. It's not ideal that there are some differences with the username, etc., but that shouldn't affect searchability and discoverability. Also, most people you link to the page will understand, or may not even notice.
DISPLAYTITLE editing is blocked because it's a spam vector. It creates more problems for the wiki than it solves. This feature is disabled by default. We enabled it for a one specific purpose (the main page) and then blocked its use.
When you're done migrating back, ping me here and I can delete the redirects.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Nice profile btw. I hope this doesn't discourage you from future edits. Shanecrowley (talk) 08:46, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Shane, I’ve moved my profile back to User:Marius.quabeck as suggested. Could you please delete the two main-namespace redirects, Marius.Quabeck and Marius.quabeck? Thanks for your help! Marius.quabeck (talk) 08:58, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done! Thanks for your understanding. Shanecrowley (talk) 09:08, 25 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
