Xubuntu
Introduction
The aim of the Xubuntu community project is to provide a nice Ubuntu desktop experience (even on older hardware) by using Xfce4 as the desktop environment and GTK+ 2 applications wherever possible.
Xfce4 has been supported in Ubuntu's universe by the [:MOTUXfce] team since Hoary. For Breezy we want to go one step further and make Xubuntu a sibling of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu by having install and live CD images generated for it. We haven't decided on a release date, but it should be as close as possible to Breezy's and should use the latest stable Xfce 4.2.x code.
Progress report
as of 27 sep:
- xubuntu-desktop uploaded to universe containing Xorg + Xfce4.2.2 core + goodies + xfce4-terminal + xfmedia
- xubuntu-devel mailing list created (thanks jdub!)
as of 30 sep:
- firefox, gaim, and synaptic added to xubuntu-desktop
- xubuntu-devel mailing list and #xubuntu IRC channel (irc.freenode.net) activated (mostly regarding package selection)
closed 3 out of 6 Xfce bugs in Malone, that's 50% !
- there's a proposed logo (Steve)
- the newest member of MOTUXfce, Markus, started packaging xfce4-taskmanager and filed ITP in Debian
as of 6 oct:
- esound will be part of xubuntu, but it is not set up yet by default
- worked on a gtk2-only evince, looks promising, need to make a package of it
- Jozsef Mak has been working on wallpapers and an usplash image
- Markus packaged the taskmanager, it's on REVU waiting another vote
- volume management with ivman was discussed on the list, need to evaluate it
as of 19 oct:
- Ooops, we missed Breezy, this might become a Dapper Drake fork, but who knows?
- Logo Proposal number 2 recieved (Viper550)
- Who knows what the future of Xubuntu holds...
List of tasks
These need integration with xfce settings so that the default install has as much as possible of it set up and working.
- Printing support (cups/gimp-print-drivers/foomatic ?)
- Sound (esound)
- Volume manager for automounting media (ivman? pmount?)
Package selection
As stated above, the criteria for packages to be included is: GTK+ 2 apps, preferably with no GNOME dependencies because of memory footprint issues which consequently affect general performance particularly on older hardware.
Artwork
Logo, Usplash, wallpapers, etc.
