UbuntuBudgie

We’re preparing Ubuntu Budgie 17.10, Artful Aardvark, for distribution in October 2017. With this first beta you will see what the next version will contain. We have some interesting things happening, so read on for highlights and information.

NOTE: This is the beta 1 pre-release. Ubuntu Budgie Pre-releases are NOT recommended for:

  • Regular users who are not aware of pre-release issues.
  • Anyone who needs a stable system.
  • Anyone uncomfortable running a possibly frequently broken system.
  • Anyone in a production environment with data or workflows that need to be reliable.

Ubuntu Budgie beta 1 pre-releases ARE recommended for:

  • Users who want to help us test by finding, reporting, and/or fixing bugs. You can find more about helping to test and bug triage at Ubuntu Budgie testing.

  • Ubuntu Budgie developers.
  • People wanting to see and test how the current snapshot of Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 will look and behave.

Getting Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 Beta 1

The full listing of available images is here. You must check both the download and then the check install media on 1st boot before attempting an install. Instructions for burning the image to a CD / DVD or copying to a USB flash drive can be found on the Burning ISO Howto.

Upgrading from Previous Versions

We need feedback as to upgrading from Ubuntu Budgie 17.04.

Beta 1 Highlights

  • Dropbox icon correctly displayed in the panel
  • GNOME-Control-Settings icons are now accessible via the menu
  • Extra terminals uxterm and xterm are no longer shown in the menu
  • Reduced memory idle usage by dropping tracker related applications.
  • Dropped GNOME Contacts, GNOME Documents and GNOME Photos
  • Replaced GNOME Photos with gThumb
  • Nautilus 3.24 support

  • Budgie Desktop 10.4 uplift from 10.2.9 - lots of bug fixes
  • Supports customisable date and time display
  • Stylish Alt-Tab support
  • Raven now supports Spotify
  • Switch windows controls to the left or right support
  • Places now supports encrypted volumes and SMB shares and other fixes.
  • Bottom panel popovers now work without the dreaded "jump down" effect
  • All popovers are now stylishly animated
  • Raven has been restyled - Budgie Settings dialog now introduced
  • Workspace applet completely revamped
  • Budgie Menu revamped - easier to type and find things
  • Support for left and right side panels
  • All panels can now be converted into Docks
  • All panels support Transparency for the system theme
  • All panels and docks can now dynamically autohide
  • Night-light and Caffeine (deactivates screensaver) are now shipped as default panel icons
  • Debian wallpaper is no longer shipped with Ubuntu Budgie
  • Added a material design inspired wallpaper - used when using budgie-welcome makeovers.
  • Display video thumbnails in Files
  • Support compilation of broadcom drivers from the live ISO
  • Move from Terminix to Tilix for the terminal emulator
  • Disable default Guest Session
  • Revamped Panel Icons - stylish support for common applications such as Caffeine and Dropbox
  • Plymouth now correctly displays the crypt password entry field for when drives are encrypted.
  • Can now remove default installed applications without removing all key budgie desktop applications.
  • login screen changed from lightdm-gtk-greeter to slick-greeter

Development of Ubuntu Budgie 17.10, the Artful Aaardvark, is ongoing and bugs are fixed every day. Before reporting bugs, please ensure your system is up-to-date. For verifying installation related bugs, updated disk images are available from Daily created images for standard PCs, laptops and netbooks.
