An update was introduced to the video graphics subsystem, to enable Ubuntu to work on more systems. The update, although tested, contained an error. This error has been corrected since.
A number of Ubuntu users who updated their system within a 1day period may be affected by the error.

Users who are potentially affected, may follow the instructions below. The steps involved, will:
Determine if the affected version (1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3) is installed.
Ensure a safe version (Xorg 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4 or above) is downloaded.
If you are in any doubt whether your machine will be affected by Ubuntu bug #57153 ("X: no screens found"), then please follow these steps:
Open the Synaptic Application, using the menus System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager as shown:
Your login password will be requested, please press the Enter key after doing so:
An introduction screen, similar to the one below, will be displayed if this is your first use of the Synaptic Package Manager. You should click on the Close button to proceed.
The Synaptic Package Manager main screen will display on your screen. Locate and click the Search button on the toolbar:
A dialog box similar to this one will pop up. Type xserver-xorg-core into the Search box and click on the Search button:
Information regarding the xserver-xorg-core will be listed. The middle column shows the version number. Check this version number against the table above to determine if you have the affected version.
From now on, please proceed only if the currently installed version of xserver-xorg-core is on the affected list, described above. Affected machines have xserver-xorg-core version 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3, as shown below:
To upgrade your system to the fixed version, click on the Mark All Upgrades button, on the toolbar.
A new pop up window, asking if you really want to mark the affected package for upgrade will display. Click on the Mark button to proceed.
Now your system is ready to be updated. Click the Apply button on the toolbar
A pop up window will display. Click the Apply button to update your system.
- A new pop up window, with the upgrade progress will be show, as indicated below. You can just wait for the process to complete.
Finally, the Synaptic Package Manager will say All Changes Applied, meaning your system was successfully upgraded. Click the Close button.
- As indicated below, your system now has the fixed version of xserver-xorg-core, and has no chances of being affected by Ubuntu bug #57153. You can now close Synaptic.
