Ayatana is the collective project that houses many user interface, design and interaction projects started by Canonical.
Ayatana's goal is to build a set of well researched and defined technologies to help extend, improve and refine the Open Source desktop. Currently, Ayatana comprises of the following Open Source projects:
notify-osd - a notification service and a set of guidelines for organizing user interactions with notifications and dialog windows (http://launchpad.net/notify-osd)
message indicator - a generic message indicator and its underlying indicators framework ( http://launchpad.net/indicator-applet)
