  • I am starting my fourth year of grad school at the University of Nevada, Reno. I am working on my PhD in Physical Chemistry. I have been an avid linux user since I started grad school. I started off with Red Hat 7.2 and then moved on to Gentoo for a couple of years, but got tired of the compiling and tweaking and I wasn't spending as much time using my computer. I tried to find a binary equivalent of Gentoo and tried Suse for a while (9.1 & 9.2) and then I found Ubuntu. Once I got past the weird names (Ubuntu, Warty, Hoary, ...) I really started liking it. It has newer packages (no xorg in Debian kept me away from it for a while), killer community, and it "just works".
