Graphics acceleration/3D
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron) automatically finds and downloads an ATI restricted driver. You only need to open the restricted hardware drivers tool, activate it and reboot.
Compiz desktop effects
- Works, but system becomes unstable.
Correct audio volume
- Microphone is so low.
Wireless NIC
- Ubuntu 8.04: Automatically offered driver doesn't run well.
- With Synaptic, install the package "build-essential"
Check if Ubuntu has already detected and enabled the Atheros drivers that come with repositories, with the tool for restricted hardware drivers (jockey). Disable all elements related with Atheros.
Download the last MadWifi package from http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/
With a Terminal window (console), move (cd) to the directory where have downloaded the new MadWifi package
Extract the package (example): sudo tar -xzvf madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4003-20090416.tar.gz
Move to the new directory (example): cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4003-20090416/
Compile: sudo make
Install the new specific driver: sudo make install
With a Terminal window (console) edit the "/etc/modules" file with the command: sudo gedit /etc/modules
- Add the following lines at the end if doesn't exist:
ath_hal wlan ath_pci
- Restart the computer.
- Ubuntu 9.10: Just run this on a terminal:
sudo su modprobe ath5k echo "ath5k" >>/etc/modules exit
