Interests regarding Ubuntu (was my membership application)

I am a long time Free Software and Debian user (since ~1998), developer and advocate. More than a year ago, I got the chance to beta-test what was by then called [http://www.no-name-yet.com/ no-name-yet] (see for example this [http://bugs.debian.org/269025 xserver-xfree86 bug] I worked on with fabbione in Aug/Sep 2004). I've been using and advocating Ubuntu since then, and I got interested by the MOTU process in september when I discovered that some Ruby-related packages weren't in such a good shape. Ubuntu is a very interesting and successful project, and I'd like to help make it even better.

My areas of interest include :

  • efficient management of universe packages : I started working on ["MultiDistroTools"], a set of scripts to help manage a lot of packages (see this [http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-motu/2005-November/000004.html status summary] for more info). My goal inside MOTU is to help reduce bottlenecks and make the whole process smoother by reducing complexity.

  • ruby-related packages : I am a Ruby programmer, and would like to improve the general quality of Ruby in Ubuntu (which wasn't really satisfying in Breezy). I work inside both ["MOTURuby"] and the [http://pkg-ruby-extras.alioth.debian.org/ Debian pkg-ruby-extras team] to achieve this goal, and am upstream & maintainer of several Ruby-related Debian packages. (See below for merges and bugs I worked on) I'm also interested in using ["AutomatedTesting"] to test ruby packages (which is easy, since most ruby software already comes with unit tests).

  • use of Ubuntu by non-computer-geeks : my 75 years old grandmother, as well as my mother and my girlfriend, are all Ubuntu users. I'd like to make it easier for people like them to use Ubuntu. I haven't thought about it a lot, but maybe starting a team like "Ubuntu for non-geeks" to share usage reports and track usability issues that makes it difficult to use Ubuntu for "normal people" would be a good start.

Outside of Debian and Ubuntu, my work includes :

Ubuntu Work

  • ["MOTUTools"] : a set of scripts to help manage a lot of packages (see also above). Currently sitting in ["REVU"].
  • ["MOTURuby"] : I 'm currently the only active member, but I hope to help get others involved too.
