Work with “one canvas workflow” in steps:

1. Download SVG template.

2. Put downloaded template into ~/.inkscape/templates (or ~/.config/Inkscape if you are using Inkscape from current SVN). It should then be visible in content of inkscape menu "File → New".

  • For simplicity this step may be skipped and you may start work right after opening downloaded template in inkscape.

3. Enable layers toolbox (keycombo Shift+Ctrl+L or use menu "Layer → Layers..."). After then in toolbox you see 3 layer names with their sublayers:

  • I. instructions

    II. path/template

    • * plate

    III. palette

    • * Color cues

4. Rename layer "path/template" to match path and icon name on what you want work (at example "actions/gnome-help")

5. Unlock renamed layer with one click on small chain before layer name.

6. Draw your icon in layer “path/template” (currently renamed to match your icon).

7. Insert into sublayer named “plate” two text objects. In first text object labeled “context” (label may be set by selecting text object, right click → Object Properties, set Label to context) will be text with icon category name (at example “actions”). In second text object labeled “icon-name” will be text with icon name (at example gnome-help)

8. Set sublayer “plate” from layer “path/template” (currently renamed to match your icon) to invisible by one click on eye before chain.

9. Save icon into SVG file with name of your icon (at example “gnome-help”)
