Myna
Myna is a local speech-to-text application for Ubuntu Desktop.
When Myna is running, you can write into text fields by pressing a keyboard shortcut and speaking.
Myna is one of the first features released as part of the development of a context-aware Desktop.
How it works
Myna relies on speech recognition models, which are downloaded to your machine and run locally.
Myna does not require an internet connection and no recordings are stored or uploaded.
You can choose from multiple models to optimize for speech and accuracy.
It's also possible to leverage GPU acceleration if you have a supported NVIDIA card.
Installation
You need Ubuntu 24.04 or later to try Myna, which is currently available as a technology preview.
Install Myna by running the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-desktop-team/myna
sudo apt install myna-config
Usage
Open Myna settings from Activities, or run myna-config , to set up your preferences.
Once set up, put your cursor anywhere that you would normally type text, press the configured keyboard shortcut, and start talking.
Myna can potentially be used in a wide variety of tasks, including drafting text and prompting LLMs. It may also be more accessible than physical typing for some desktop users.
