New features and changes in 24.10
Details of the changes in the Ubuntu base, including kernel, toolchain and build options can be found in the main Ubuntu Release Notes.
Kubuntu core desktop and applications
Plasma 6.1: Replacing Plasma 5 in Kubuntu.
The Kubuntu team have been working hard to ship 24.10 with the new Qt6 based Plasma 6 KDE desktop.
Included is Plasma 6.1 which is the 2nd feature release of the 6 series. 24.10 ships with the 5th bugfix release of 6.1 (6.1.5).
More details of what was new with Plasma 6 can be found in the original announcement for the first 6.0 release.
Plasma Wayland session
The Plasma wayland session is now the default option in sddm (display manager login screen). An X11 session can be selected instead if desired. The last used session type will be remembered, so you do not have to switch type on each login.
Qt and KDE Frameworks
Kubuntu 24.10 ships with Qt6 6.6.2 and KDE Frameworks 6 version 6.6.0.
For applications that are still based on Qt5/KF5, Qt5 5.15.15 and Frameworks 5.116.0 are still in the archive.
KDE Applications updates
In this interim Kubuntu release many core applications have been updated to the latest KDE Gear 24.08. Others may remain at 23.08 or 24.05.
Web browser and office suite
Firefox 131 snap is the default browser from the Snap Store.
LibreOffice 24.8 is provided by default in the full installation.
Kernel
Kubuntu 24.10 ships with the 6.11 Linux kernel.
Acknowledgments of work from Debian.
- Debian Qt/KDE team - Their work in Debian has been a crucial platform to build on for 24.10. In particular, but certainly not limited to, work by Patrick Franz and Aurélien Couderc on Qt6, Frameworks, Plasma 6 and applications in experimental. Our Kubuntu developer Scarlett Moore as a Debian developer has also played a significant part in the packaging of many apps for Qt6/KF6.
Known issues

To enable Flatpaks in KDE’s Discover in Kubuntu 24.10, run this command:
sudo apt install flatpak plasma-discover-backend-flatpak
To enable the largest Flatpak repository, run this command:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
Log out and log back in (or restart) to re-initialize the XDG_DATA_DIRS variable, otherwise, newly installed Flatpak apps will not run or appear in the startup menu.
