About Me

I first became interested in Linux in 2000 when I saw RedHat, Mandrake and several other distributions being sold as cheap box sets in one of my local bookshops. Unfortunately, I never managed to get any of those early installations working properly so I reluctantly gave up and returned to Windows.

Ten years later, at the beginning of 2010, my father, who had taken up an interest in computing upon his retirement, told me that he was using Ubuntu Linux and shortly after I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on an old Dell Dimension 8400 PC which I had purchased in 2005. Although upgraded, this PC saw regular use until just before the release of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin in April 2012 when it was reluctantly retired from service.

I started beta testing with the Ubuntu 10.10 release code-named Maverick Meerkat followed by Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwhal and have been involved in testing and the reporting of bugs of each release since then.

I am currently using Kubuntu 13.04, Lubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS at home, and Ubuntu Server 12.10 on my VPS.

I am also a licensed amateur radio operator, call-sign G4MBY, previously G6AVH although currently inactive. I am looking at ways to combine my interest in amateur radio with that of Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

My Contributions

Ubuntu Bug Squad

I joined the Ubuntu Bug Squad in July 2013 to help me maintain a more consistent approach dealing with bug reports, especially those related to Kubuntu.

Ubuntu Documentation

In August 2013 I joined the Ubuntu Documentation Team with the aim of improving and updating Ubuntu Wiki pages as they become out of date.

Ubuntu Forums

I have been a member of Ubuntu Forums since May 2010 and Kubuntu Forums since March 2011. I hope to increase my presence on Ubuntu Forums by answering general support questions especially those related to Kubuntu and KDE.

Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter

I started contributing to the production of the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter on a regular basis in May 2013 (edition 316) by collecting links to stories and writing summaries each weekend immediately prior to publication.

Future Plans

I currently plan to:

  • Actively contribute to more Ubuntu related projects.
  • Become an Ubuntu or Kubuntu member.
