I first became interested in Linux in 2000 when I saw RedHat, Mandrake and may be other distributions being sold as cheap box sets in one of my local bookshops. Unfortunately I never managed to get anything working satisfactorily so I soon gave up and returned to Windows until last year, 2010. My father who had taken up an interest in computing upon his retirement told me he was playing with Ubuntu Linux and I soon found that I could get it running very well on my ageing PC which was soon upgraded with new hard drives, extra memory and a better video card. | I first became interested in Linux in 2000 when I saw !RedHat, Mandrake and several other distributions being sold as cheap box sets in one of my local bookshops. I joined the [[http://ubuntuforums.org|Ubuntu Forums]] in May of 2010 and did quite a bit of lurking until I started beta testing Ubuntu 10.10, codenamed Maverick Meerkat. I started testing Natty Narwhal once it entered the alpha 2 stage through to the release date. I am currently dual booting between Ubuntu 10.04 and Kubuntu 11.04 and will return to testing and using Unity during either the 11.10 or 12.04 development cycles. | Ten years later, at the beginning of 2010, my father, who had taken up an interest in computing upon his retirement, told me that he was using Ubuntu Linux and shortly after I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on an old Dell Dimension 8400 PC which I had purchased in 2005. Although upgraded, this PC saw regular use until just before the release of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin in April 2012 when it was reluctantly retired from service. |

About Me
I first became interested in Linux in 2000 when I saw RedHat, Mandrake and several other distributions being sold as cheap box sets in one of my local bookshops. Unfortunately, I never managed to get any of those early installations working properly so I reluctantly gave up and returned to Windows.

I am currently using Kubuntu 13.04, Lubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS at home, and Ubuntu Server 12.10 on my VPS.
I am also a licensed amateur radio operator, call-sign G4MBY, previously G6AVH although currently inactive. I am looking at ways to combine my interest in amateur radio with that of Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
