Introduction
We are preparing Kubuntu Plucky Puffin (25.04) for release in April, 2025. With this Beta pre-release, you can see what we are testing in preparation for our next version.
NOTE:
This is Beta Release. Kubuntu Beta Releases are NOT recommended for:
- Regular users who are not aware of pre-release issues
- Anyone who needs a stable system
- Anyone uncomfortable running a possibly frequently broken system
- Anyone in a production environment with data or workflows that need to be reliable
Kubuntu Beta Releases are recommended for:
- Regular users who want to help us test by finding, reporting, and/or fixing bugs
- Kubuntu, KDE, and Qt developers

Getting Kubuntu 25.04 Beta
Upgrading from 24.10
To upgrade to a Kubuntu 25.04 pre-release version, run sudo do-release-upgrade -d from a command line.
Download a Disk Image
Download a Bootable image. Direct downloads, torrents, and zysnc are available as options.
New features and changes in 25.04 Beta

Kubuntu core desktop and applications
Plasma 6.3:
The Kubuntu team have been working hard to ship 25.04 with the latest Qt6 based Plasma 6.3 KDE desktop.
Included is Plasma 6.3 which is the fourth feature release of the 6 series.
More details of what was new with Plasma 6 can be found in the original announcement for the first 6.0 release.
Plasma Wayland session
The Plasma Wayland session is now the default option in SDDM (display manager login screen). An X11 session can be selected instead if desired. The last used session type will be remembered, so you do not have to switch type on each login.
Qt and KDE Frameworks
Kubuntu 25.04 Beta ships with Qt6.8 and KDE Frameworks version 6.12.0.
For applications that are still based on Qt5/KF5, Qt5 5.15.15 and Frameworks 5.116.0 are still in the archive.
KDE Applications updates
All KDE gear currently packaged by Ubuntu or Debian are now at least at the latest 24.12.3.
Web browser and office suite
Firefox 136 snap is the default browser from the Snap Store.
LibreOffice 25.2 is provided by default in the full installation.
Kernel
Kubuntu 25.04 ships with the 6.14 Linux kernel.

Feedback
Development of Kubuntu 25.04, Plucky Puffin Oriole, is ongoing and bugs are fixed every day. Before reporting bugs, please ensure your system is up to date. For verifying installation related bugs, updated disk images are available from Daily bootable images for standard PCs and laptops.
