Pending issues
- VIA graphics driver doesn't run for 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).
- Desktop effects (Compiz/Beryl) doesn't work because the openchrome driver only supports 2D acceleration.
- Until Ubuntu 7.10 Wireless long usage (hours) freezes the system.
- For Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog) there are some other guides:

Image seen on screen
Manufacturer name: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
In Microsoft Windows is installed with "K817C0.inf"
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex): Seems to autodetect the VIA - S3 Unichrome Pro device and apply some driver, but xserver hangs. Since this version Ubuntu project has removed packages xserver-xorg-video-unichrome and xserver-xorg-video-via from the repositories. They have maintained only xserver-xorg-video-openchrome. We've run out graphic acceleration nor resolution.
The light way (without changing software):
Boot on recovery mode. In Live-CD you can press [F6] at boot menu, delete the string splash --, and add the word single
When the system shows a text menu (Recovery menu), select "Drop to root shell prompt"
Edit manually the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf (you can use the command nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
- Insert a new line in the section "Device" with the following text: Driver "vesa"
Introduce the command exit
When the Recovery menu returns, select "Resume normal boot". You'll only view unaccelerated graphics at 800x600 resolution. That's all.

- Can try openchrome driver in u8.10?
Correct resolution
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.06 (Dapper Drake): In Live-CD, even specifying 1280x800 in boot menu, screen goes to 1024x768.
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron): Needed to edit manually the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the folowing lines in the section "Screen":
DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" ""800x600" EndSubSection
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
- Insert the folowing lines in the section "Screen":
Subsection "Display" Virtual 1280 800 EndSubsection
Graphic acceleration
Manufacturer name: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP<BR>
In Microsoft Windows is installed with "K817C0.inf"
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.06 (Dapper Drake): Yes, but GL games often freeze.
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron): Edit manually the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and insert a new line in the section "Device" with the following text:
Driver "via"
Other references: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope): Seems to apply openchrome driver automatically.
Blank monitor on inactivity
- The screen shows strange image, like unsupported refresh rate.
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.06 (Dapper Drake): Passed long time with screensavers the system completely freezes.
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope): Solved with openchrome driver.
Mic jack
- Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.06 (Dapper Drake): Very low volume with Sound Recorder.
Wireless NIC
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Install the ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 package
Download and unpack the WinXP driver for Acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card NDIS Miniport Driver
- With a terminal go to the driver's directory (as 80211g/Winxp)
sudo ndiswrapper -i neti2220.inf
Check the neti2220 driver is installed and the device is found present with: sudo ndiswrapper -l
If so: sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
- Check your network manager detects and connects wireless
If so: sudo ndiswrapper -m to be loaded on boot.
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Try the Jaunty method or:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/ipn2220
Ubuntu GNU/Linux 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Try the Jaunty method
Live-CD boots until desktop
* Ubuntu GNU/Linux 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog): Must select "vesa" for graphics. "via" fails.
