What needed to be done after Jaunty install

• get the latest NVIDIA drivers tarball from the website. Drivers packages 180 and 173 in Jaunty did not work. kill gdm, run the install*.sh as root from a console tty, let it reconfigure /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart /etc/init.d/gdm
• aptitude install nvidia-settings fnfxd toshset toshutils

• if you want to use the SVGA output port, you'll need to change the BIOS to send output to both LCD screen and SVGA port. reboot, Ctrl-Esc during reboot to get the BIOS config. If you have 'nvidia-settings' package installed, in Gnome, go to System > Administration > NVIDIA X Server Settings to enable the SVGA output.

What still doesn't work

• no DRI when using Xinerama to have "two monitors" setup with SVGA output port.
• no adjusting lcd contrast from command-line nor with Fn- keys; get an 'operation not permitted' error when using toshset.
• no volume-up/volume-down with Fn- keys, but there's a rolling switch the back right corner (under your right wrist) on the laptop anyways, so it's not really necessary. fnfxd configures Fn-Esc as "mute/unmute" by default, and that works.
