Notes

0) Access BIOS settings

Hit F12 when the Dell logo is displayed to access BIOS settings and change the boot order.

1) Potential issue with Mobile Intel QM57 Express chipset:

Effect(s): screen remains blank
Work around: See second potential issue below
Bug report(s): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/557744

2) Potential issue with NVidia NVS 3100M videocard

Effect(s): screen remains blank
Work around: (copied from install report on HP EliteBook 8440p)

  1. after boot from installer media select the nomodeset option (F6)

  2. after installation, hit SHIFT during boot to get grub screen

  3. change 'quiet splash' to 'nosplash nomodeset' on line that starts with 'linux'

  4. crtl-x to continue booting

  5. after login, activate proprietary NVidia drivers (requires Internet access?)

  6. edit /etc/default/grub: change to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='nosplash nomodeset'

  7. sudo update-grub

Bug report(s):

3) No scrolling with Alps touchpad

Bug report(s):

4) Ricoh e822 card reader

Patch proposed in Bugzilla successfully applied to 2.6.32-24.39 kernel modules:

5) Internal microphone

The internal microphone does not work after a default install. Append the line "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-s14" to file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, reboot and adjust the mixer levels. Thanks to lidex on UbuntuForums:
