Devanagari

Devanāgarī is the main script used to write Standard Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit. Devanāgarī is also employed for Bhojpuri, Gujari, Pahari (Garhwali and Kumaoni), Konkani, Magahi, Maithili, Marwari, Bhili, Newari, Santhali, Tharu, and sometimes Sindhi, Sherpa and Kashmiri.

Although the character set consists of a limited number of consonant and vowel symbols, a font can still easily reach over 600 glyphs(!) due to its use of complex ligatures.

An estimated 258 million people speak Hindi, 90 million Marathi, 20 million Nepali, 38 million Bhojpuri, ...
