What is UbuntuKylin ?

The objective of the UbuntuKylin project is to create a variant of Ubuntu that is more suitable for Chinese users. We are committed to provide you with a delicate, thoughtful and fully customized Chinese user experience out-of-the-box. For instance, by providing a desktop user interface localized in Chinese and installing common software that Chinese users commonly use by default. UbuntuKylin has been a formal member of the Ubuntu family, since UbuntuKylin 13.04. Now, UbuntuKylin 13.10 is the second release version.

System Requirements

A Pentium II or Celeron system with 512 MB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with a standard UbuntuKylin desktop.

13.10 32 bit ISO require your CPU to have Physical Address Extensions, or PAE. "PAE is provided by Intel Pentium Pro and above CPUs, including all later Pentium-series processors (except most 400 MHz-bus versions of the Pentium M)." - If you have a NON-PAE CPU and would like to install Ubuntu 12.10, please see this link or you can use Ubuntu 12.04 instead. For Intel based Macs, UbuntuKylin 13.10 should run on all models.

  • The Release ISO can be downloaded from here.

To upgrade from UbuntuKylin 13.04 on a desktop system:

  • Open Software Sources.
  • Press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box.
  • Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '13.10' is available.
  • Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Known Issues

  • Chinese localization for dash is not completely. (1222621)

  • Chinese localization for shutdown interface. (1231437)

Installation and Updates

  • In some cases, when installing to a disk that was previously partitioned, the installer (both text and GUI versions) will give an error about being unable to inform the kernel about partition changes. The workaround for this is to remove the partition table entirely and then reboot back into the installer. (1229432)

  • The desktop image installer cannot unlock existing encrypted (LUKS) volumes. If you need to make use of existing encrypted volumes during partitioning, then use the "Try Ubuntu without installing" boot option to start a live session, open the encrypted volumes (for example, by clicking on their icons in the Unity launcher), enter your password when prompted to unlock them, close them again, and run ubiquity to start the installer. (1066480)

  • When using installer to upgrade or reinstall an existing installation with encrypted swap, the installer may fail to reuse the partition. A warning will be shown, however the installation can be completed. The installed system will not have swap activated and users are advised to recreate swap on their systems. Please see advice about adding and activating swap at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq (LP: #1172002)

  • Installs on very small memory systems may fail to start or exit without completing with no error. It is recommended that swap be created before install for such systems. Please see advice about adding and activating swap at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq (LP: #1172161)

  • In rare circumstances the 'Next' button on the installer 'Install Type' screen is non-functional. This is intermittent and may be resolved by hitting 'Back' and retrying. (LP: #1172572)

  • In order to improve compatibility with other local nameserver packages, NetworkManager now assigns IP address to the local nameserver process that it controls instead of If the system's /etc/resolv.conf is absent or is a static file instead of the symbolic link to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf installed by default then this static file will have to be updated by the administrator in order to continue using the NetworkManager-controlled nameserver.
