Community Council Call for Nominations

Elizabeth Krumbach Joseph of the Ubuntu Community Council announces an election to restaff the current 7 sitting board members of the Ubuntu Community Council, and hence calls for nominations for the election. Ubuntu Members who are dedicated to the project, well-respected, have a good overview of the project and are organized are welcome to nominate themselves to the Council by 16:00 UTC, 8th October, 2013. Elizabeth also answers some common questions about the Community Council’s work and function.

Charm Championship to be judged by industry leaders

Canonical announces the expert panel of judges to be judging the Juju Charm Championship, including Adrian Cockroft for media, Eric Hammond, Chad Fowler and Simon Wardley for continuous deployment, Pete Warden and Mark Mims for data science, Alan Quayle for telecommunications, Florian Haas and James Page for high availability, and John Vincent for monitoring. Contestants of the Championship are reminded of the six steps to follow in order to participate.

Nicholas Skaggs: Testing Ubuntu Touch: The final month before release

Nicholas Skaggs asks for community testers to help out testing images using their Ubuntu Touch images, confirming bugs or to write autopilot tests. He reminds us that the Ubuntu Touch images are to be released in a month, and will require testing.

Robie Basak: Continuous integration of your Ubuntu-based server deployments

Robie Basak proposes that institutions using continuous integration deployments with Ubuntu keep an eye on the development version of Ubuntu, suggesting: “How about a branch that targets the Ubuntu development release? This way your continuous integration can flag any action you need to take to make your deployment work against the next release (and thus the next LTS, if you deploy on LTS).”

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Ubuntu App Showdown update: all apps in the Store!

David Planella announces that all apps submitted for the Ubuntu App Showdown 2013 are now available in the Ubuntu Software Store to be downloaded and installed into an Ubuntu Touch device. He mentions that after a final round of testing the final list of apps will be published and the judging will start.

Jono Bacon: Building an Ubuntu App Developer Advocacy Community

Jono Bacon writes that making things better for Ubuntu App Developers can best be done by building a new community for them. This will partly will be done by showcasing video tutorials, training weeks, local tutorial schools, app contests, and more. A good place to start helping is to join the “Users of the Ubuntu Etherpad instance” team.

Lubuntu Blog: StartUbuntu

Rafael Laguna writes that StartUbuntu is a huge project and a massive campaign that is aimed at Windows XP Users by offering them a free Linux-based system. Rafael adds that StartUbuntu is offering not just one "replacement" for Windows XP but nine alternatives, and links to further information regarding the the Ubuntu derivatives and StartUbuntu artwork.

Stephen Michael Kellat: Value of Offline Documentation

Stephen Michael Kellat reflects upon the work done on the Xubuntu offline documentation and stresses the importance of putting effort into developing it. Kellat demonstrates: “Offline documentation serves a useful purpose with all of our flavors. The so-called "digital divide" has shifted from being a matter of lacking discrete points of access to the Internet to a marked divergence in the degrees of quality among those access points. When the lights go out for me or my broadband provider has a line cut, having offline documentation is better than having access to nothing at all.”

Mark Baker announces that Juju fully supports deploying services on Ubuntu into Windows Azure. Fresh Ubuntu Certified images are available for Windows Azure deployment, and automation of the cloud infrastructure is much easier. He also reminds us that it is a good opportunity to submit entries to the Juju Charm Championship.

HP releases Ubuntu loaded machines in 1,500 stores in China

Canonical announces that HP Pavilion laptops pre-installed with Ubuntu is now available in over 1,500 stores across major cities in China, with helping materials available and over 4,000 in-store staff trained to promote the benefits of Ubuntu.

Creating Evernote on Ubuntu for smartphones

Canonical announces a project to write an open-source Evernote app for Ubuntu Touch, and invites community contributors to participate in the development of the app, making Evernote available in multiple platforms. She also notes that it has received Evernote’s support in developing the app.

Ubuntu penguins strain to squeeze out bug backlog by mobe OS deadline

Gavin Clarke of The Register reports "Canonical is rushing to finish the smartphone-friendly version of its distro for its 17 October launch" and lists the supported devices. Gavin adds that handsets running Ubuntu out of the box are not expected until early next year and that Canonical is pushing on with Ubuntu Touch despite the failure to raise enough donations to pay for development of its own phone.

Ubuntu Phone Will Offer Integrated Facebook Web App

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes: “Each release of Ubuntu since 12.10 has shipped with ‘Unity Web Apps‘ – a feature that allows a number of websites to ‘hook in’ to the desktop to deliver updates and notifications, give access to music controls, etc. A community-crafted Facebook ‘app’ for Ubuntu Touch will do something similar. It takes the regular Facebook mobile site and integrates it with various features of the Touch interface.”

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reports that a powerful new Ubuntu PC has been revealed by Linux computer company System76. Joey-Elijah gives the specification of the fourth generation of the Leopard Extreme series and advises that pricing starts at $1,699.00 for the ‘base’ model.

Munich Starts Distributing Free Ubuntu CDs to Windows XP Users

Radu Tyrsina of Windows 8 Apps writes about the city of Munich’s effort to switch users from Windows XP to using Ubuntu, by providing 2,000 free Ubuntu 12.04 LTS CDs in its libraries. Radu also notes the city’s plan to use its own variant of Linux, LiMux, in its 22 departments at 51 locations.
