Dustin Kirkland: My Linux Rigs

In an interview with Steven Ovadia, as part of the My Linux Rig series, Dustin Kirkland talks about why he uses Linux, which distribution and desktop environment he uses, and which one piece of software he depends on. Dustin tells us that Byobu adds hours of productivity to his work every week, shares a screenshot of his desktop and says "No icons on my desktop. Ever, ever, ever."

Canonical Design Team: Cloud sprint: what I’ve learned about testing and code reviews

Anthony Dillon informs us that he recently attended a cloud sprint in San Francisco as a front-end developer for the new Juju GUI product. Anthony writes about Mocha testing, linting and code reviews, and concludes "We all want our code to be perfect and to learn from others on a daily basis. That is what code reviews give us."

Terence Simpson: An open letter to the Ubuntu IRC community and wider Ubuntu community

Terence Simpson posts a copy of an open letter to the Ubuntu IRC community that raises several points regarding issues with the maintenance of the Ubuntu IRC channels, including a shift toward robotically enforcing rules and kicking/banning users without raising questions. The authors of the letter wish to see more open dialog, and an attempt to caution offenders without immediately banning them.

Ubuntu GNOME: Brainstorming Team & Urgent Need for More Contributors

Ali Linx announces that the full structuring of Ubuntu GNOME Team has been successfully completed and that the Brainstorming Team will work side by side with other Sub-Teams. Ali says all planning and important discussions about the future of Ubuntu GNOME will take place on the Brainstorming Team and concludes “All of us are smarter than anyone of us.”

In a follow-up post Ali appeals for experienced contributors to help with bug control, bug fixing and packaging, and can commit for two to five years.

Ubuntu Women: Evaluating harvest.ubuntu.com

Elizabeth Krumbach Joseph informs us that the Harvest project which was launched several years ago never really took off but during a recent Ubuntu Women meeting the project was remembered. Elizabeth advises that Project Harvest was launched to evaluate the site at harvest.ubuntu.com, and lists the four point plan for the evaluation stage.

Ezio deMauro, Canonical Technical Services Support Manager writes about the Ubuntu OpenStack Training Programme which is two weeks long and covers running Ubuntu Server in the cloud in the first week and the deployment and troubleshooting of OpenStack in the second. Kevin Purdy of IT World gives a quick tour of Ubuntu Touch 1.0 including app screenshots of weather and terminal. Kevin quotes several authors that cite issues with the platform, including instability and poor battery life, and goes on to note that many bugs are likely to be squashed soon.

[Ubuntu in the wild] US Air Force uses Ubuntu

razvi of iloveubuntu.net informs us of a US Air Force project called Mind of a Quadrotor which is shaped around a small robot capable of flying, scanning the environment with lasers, and has a goal to develop a machine capable of thinking and making its own decisions. razvi embeds a video into his post which shows that Ubuntu is being used by US Air Force engineers to develop the futuristic machine.

Ubuntu Amazon Shopping Feature Wins Canonical Anti-Privacy Award

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes following many complaints over the inclusion of Amazon shopping results in Ubuntu, Canonical has received a ‘Big Brother Award’ in Austria. The award is given to people and projects who have done the most to invade personal privacy. Meanwhile, Canonical has made several attempts to anonymize the data and better protect users’ privacy.

Ubuntu QA team launches CALL FOR PARTICIPATION to Python-aware developers interested in writing automated tests

razvi of iloveubuntu.net reminds us that the announcement that development had started on Trusty Tahr was paired with a call to interested persons seeking to improve Ubuntu as a whole by writing automated tests. razvi informs us that a small knowledge of Python is required and links to a wiki page which gives step-by-step details about writing automated tests.

4-year-old computers installed with Ubuntu and sent by System76 to Project: Community Computers, project specialized in "reusing and recycling computers and bringing technology access to those in need"

razvi of iloveubuntu.net writes that System76 is involved in reducing the gap between developed and undeveloped countries, regions and individuals by offering computers powered by Ubuntu to "in-development persons" increasing their ability to experience a better IT life. razvi goes on to say that System76 has shared on its official Google+ web page several images of computers more than four years old that have received an Ubuntu installation and have been sent to the Community Computers project which specializes in a wide range of activities including improving education in Kenya.

HUD updated in Ubuntu 14.04 with removal of inexistent entries

razvi of iloveubuntu.net writes that the HUD has been updated in Trusty Tahr to include the removal of inaccessible entries. razvi shows us some screenshots to illustrate the update and says that the new feature removes multiple faulty cases generated by unusable entries, entries that, when clicked, have no functionality and confuse the user.

Rikomagic MK802 IV LE with Ubuntu now shipping for £80 and up

Brad Linder of Liliputing tells us about the Rikomagic MK802 IV LE, a tiny ARM-based device that you can plug into a TV or monitor’s HDMI port to basically turn it into a full-fledged computer. Brad says that prices for the device start at £80 and demonstrates some of its capabilities in a video embedded in his post.
