Ubuntu Events Coming Up!

Jono Bacon informs us that every release cycle, a number of events are organized that bring the community together to create things, share ideas and knowledge, and more. Details of the latest planned events are as follows:

  • Ubuntu App Development Sprint - 12th December
  • Ubuntu App Developer Week - 20th to 25th January
  • Ubuntu Developer Week - 3rd to 7th March
  • Ubuntu Global Jam - 4th to 6th April
  • Ubuntu Open Week - 21st to 25th April

One year of ubuntu-it membership

Riccardo Padovani tells us about ubuntu-it, a verified LoCo Team that was founded in 2005, and the work he has done within the team. Riccardo ends his post by saying “And when someone asks me why I waste time with these things, well, I think this picture explains it well” and shows us a picture of a recent ubuntu-it meeting.

Kubuntu Munich bug squashing ( with a hint of Doctor Who )

shadeslayer reflects on his weekend squashing bugs with the Kubuntu and Debian teams at the LiMux offices in Munich. He says that there were some Kubuntu specific sessions relating to the upcoming LTS and concludes "No Kubuntu sprint can be complete without a Doctor Who episode, and the timing of the sprint was so perfect that we got to view the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who together!"

Charles Profitt: Best Linux Distribution: Ubuntu

Charles Profitt reproduces some tables from Linux Journal's 'Readers Choice Awards' and is pleased to see Ubuntu in first place. Charles also looks at the breakdown by Ubuntu variant and desktop, and concludes "I find it interesting that none of the responses to Gnome 3/Gnome Shell other than Unity made it in to the top five."

Kubuntu Wire: Kubuntu is Awesome

Jonathan Riddell writes that he came across a pleasing blog post titled “Kubuntu is Awesome.” It said, "Well I love Kubuntu. It is beautiful and the most stable KDE distro. Everything looks so good on Kubuntu." Jonathan says "I fully agree, the Kubuntu developers are a good looking bunch."

Ben Howard: BETA: Local Juju deployments on your Linux/OSX/Windows machine the same way you deploy in the cloud

Ben Howard writes that after a recent conversation with his peers about getting people started on Juju, Juju Vagrant images are now available. Ben explains for which platforms they are available and how to set them up. He also warns that they should be treated as being of beta quality, and provides contact details for users encountering problems.

Kubuntu: KDE Release Candidate of Applications and Platform 4.12

The Kubuntu team announces the release of packages for the KDE SC 4.12 Release Candidates. The team advise for which Kubuntu versions they are available and from where the updates can be obtained.

Canonical Shop launched Christmas bundles, up to 30% promotional prices

razvi of iloveubuntu.net writes that with just a couple of weeks till Christmas, the Canonical Shop has a variety of promotional bundles on sale - some as much as 30% off. There are also many other items for sale ranging from wearables to accessories and a wide variety of other gifts for the Ubuntu user or developer in your life.

Canonical Working To Bring Weather Channel App to Ubuntu Touch

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! observes the perhaps unsurprising news due to Canonical’s decision to make web apps first class citizens on Ubuntu. The Weather Channel’s app will be available for upcoming releases of Ubuntu Touch and Unity 8. The Weather Channel has existing, well-used, and well-defined API’s which will be used to power the community-built app and weather scope.

Canonical Now Has The Nexus 10 Running On Mir

Michael Larabel of Phoronix observes that Google’s Nexus 10 is the latest addition to a lengthening list of devices which Canonical has successfully developed for which there is Mir support. Support previously existed for four other Android devices.

Ubuntu and HP delivered 1.5 million laptops in Uttar Pradesh, 28,000 laptops in Assam, and 65,000 laptops to University of Delhi

razvi of iloveubuntu.net writes that Ubuntu and HP have been working together recently to deliver more than 1.5 million Ubuntu laptops to students, universities, and companies across India. In Assam, 28,000 laptops were awarded to students who passed more than 60% of their exams - a well-deserved prize for students with proven educational abilities.

Varghese Chacko of Muktware writes that users of Ubuntu will soon be able to search for torrents right from the Unity dash via the upcoming torrent lens which will be included by default. After initial hesitancy by its author David Calle due to torrents sometimes dubious legality, Mark Shuttleworth gave the OK on Google+ writing “David, let’s go ahead. The tool is super-useful and it’s perfectly justified to make it available by default. We use Torrents for distributing ubuntu itself. So please don’t hold back!”
