Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) reaches End of Life on May 16 2014

Adam Conrad announces that Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) will be retired on 16th May, 2014 after a support cycle which was slightly extended to overlap with the release of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Adam informs us of the supported upgrade path and links to the upgrade instructions and caveats.

Ubuntu Membership Board call for nominations

Daniel Holbach appeals for nominations of Ubuntu Members to serve on the Ubuntu Membership board. Daniel outlines the requirements needed, tells us how nominations can be submitted, and advises that nominations will be accepted until 1200 UTC on May 12th.

Welcome New Members and Developers

On behalf of the Ubuntu Membership Board, Javier Lopez welcomes two new Ubuntu Members, Alejandro Esperon and John S. Gruber.

  • Alejandro Esperon is part of the Ubuntu Community Council Uruguay,he's been involved with its local team in promoting Ubuntu and has participated actively in the UbuConLa.

  • John S. Gruber is the current maintainer of Lernid and avid tester and programmer who likes fixing bugs in Ubuntu. He has also been a crucial contributor to Ask Ubuntu in the early days.

The Ubuntu Honduras Loco Team was present at the Latin American Free Software Install Fest (FLISOL). The team members gave presentations about using free software tools for game development, web development and open hardware.

Deploying and managing workloads to POWER8

Jorge Castro tells us about deploying Ubuntu on IBM’s new Power8 architecture, and embeds a couple of videos in his post, writing "No part of this demo is staged; I literally went from nothing to fully deployed in 178 seconds." Jorge concludes his post by saying "This is the power of Juju!"

The Ubuntu Scale Out and Cloud Partner Ecosystem expands with IBM Power8

John Zannos writes about IBM’s new OpenPOWER Foundation and the new Power8 architecture which it is promoting. He says the foundation has attracted 26 partners, Canonical being one of the most recent.

Top tip, power users – upgrading Ubuntu may knacker your Linux PC

Gavin Clark, writing for The Register, notes that power users may want to think twice about upgrading from Ubuntu 13.10 to Ubuntu 14.04. Gavin says some users who have attempted the upgrade have had to manually reinstall the bootloader on the master boot record of their hard drives.
