Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Final Beta released

Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release team announces the final beta for Ubuntu 14.10. The post includes links to download locations and release notes for many of the images released, which include: “not only the Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, but also the Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu flavours.”

Didier Roche: Ubuntu Developer Tools Center: how do we run tests?

Didier Roche offers an update on the Ubuntu Loves Developers which is “starting to see multiple awesome code contributions and suggestions.” He goes on to share details about how tests are run, including use of pep8 and some details about the small, medium and large tests being run. He concludes by explaining how they’re run continuously on various types of VMs and writes “we are pretty hardcore on tests and believe it's the only way to keep quality and a sustainable system”

Scarlett Clark: Kubuntu: Frameworks 5.2.0 Released and Plasma 5.0.2 is ready for testing.

Scarlett Clark of the Kubuntu team announces the availability of Frameworks 5.2.0 and writes that she has ”finished packaging Plasma 5.0.2, it looks and runs great! We desperately need more testers! If you would like to help us test, please join us in IRC in #kubuntu-devel thanks!”

Costales: Lubuntu 14.04 for Cubieboard 2

Canonical News

Oracle and Canonical collaborate on support for Oracle Linux on Ubuntu

John Zannos of Canonical announces a collaboration with Oracle “tooffer customers support for both Ubuntu and Oracle Linux as fully supported guests on one another’s respective OpenStack offerings.” Details of this collaboration include support for each other’s Linux versions as guests in their OpenStack offerings and Canonical will also test Oracle Linux as a guest OS in its OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL) program.

Ubuntu Touch RTM released: Can it take on Android and iOS?

Jim Lynch of ITworld does an open source roundup that begins with Canonical’s release of the RTM version of Ubuntu Touch, sharing a link to a Softpedia article and speculating himself as to how Ubuntu can succeed. He writes that he is interested in seeing vendors aside from Apple and Google in the marketplace, but suspects the success of Ubuntu will depend on how quickly their app store can be populated with content and hardware quality.

Unchanging Unicorn: Don't be disappointed with Ubuntu 14.10, be happy

Scott Gilbertson of The Register reviews the final beta release of Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn, and notes that not much has changed from 14.04. He does detail some things that have changed though, like the “usual slew of standard Unity apps have all seen updates” and “some new things under the hood” like new kernel and a new Synaptic input driver for trackpads.
