Reminder: Ubuntu Online Summit 12-14 Nov

Daniel Holbach writes an email to remind us that 12th-14th November are the dates for the next Ubuntu Online Summit. Daniel tells us that sessions will fall into the following categories: App Development, Cloud DevOps, Community, Ubuntu Development, and Users. Ubuntu OpenStack – The Canonical Distribution

Canonical write that "Ubuntu OpenStack – The Canonical Distribution" is the latest OpenStack offering from Canonical and is the quickest and easiest way to build an OpenStack cloud in record time. They link to a full press release and to the site from where the software can be downloaded.

Gladinet join Canonical’s Charm Partner Programme

Canonical announce that Gladinet, a company which provides a brandable, self-hosted dropbox alternative are the most recent addition to their Charm Partner Programme [CPP]. Franklyn Peart, COO of Gladinet says: “By joining the CPP, we gain access to Ubuntu’s cloud ecosystem without needing to port our existing work to a new platform. It’s a no brainer for us!”

IBM briefing: build the future with Ubuntu on OpenPOWER

Randall Ross, on behalf of Canonical, tells us about an IBM briefing that "highlights how OpenPOWER is working with Ubuntu and Canonical to build the future." He provides a link to register for the event and says: "We look forward to providing valuable information to help you increase revenue by driving new business quickly."

Atomia bundles Canonical’s BootStack to deliver a fully managed solution for the hosting industry

Canonical write that they are pleased to announce that Atomia AB are the newest member of their Reseller programme. They say that Atomia and Canonical will promote their bundled solution in the coming OpenStack events. The posts includes links from where further information about the arrangement can be obtained.

Randall Ross: Make Software? Come to San Francisco and Check Out Ubuntu on Power!

Randall Ross writes: "Some fun Ubuntu folks will be with their IBM and OpenPower friends just south of San Francisco, California next Wednesday (Nov. 5th, 2014) to talk about the future: Ubuntu on Power." He says that registration is required but the event is free.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: It’s time for a Scope development competition!

Michael Hall writes that it's time for another development showdown, contestants having five weeks to develop a project from scratch and submit it to the Ubuntu Store. He says "But this time all of the entries must be Scopes.", and continues with a list of the prizes, on what the entries will be judged and the identities of the judges. Michael also links to the scope developer documentation and tells us how non-programmers can participate.

Jonathan Riddell: Kubuntu Vivid in Bright Blue

Jonathan Riddell announces that Kubuntu Vivid is the development name for Kubuntu 15.04 which will be released in April 2015, and that after much discussion will include Plasma 5 by default. He says that any missing bits from Plasma 5 will be added over the next six months, and that packaging will be stored in Debian git to make it easier to share updates.

Interview: NUDT talks Ubuntu Kylin and its 14.10 release

Daniel Holbach publishes an interview with Dr. Jonas Zhang of the National University of Defense Technology [NUDT] to find out more about the latest release of Ubuntu Kylin. Dr. Zhang talks about the meaning of the word "Kylin", what is different from standard Ubuntu, and the project's plans for the next LTS.

ScalingStack: 2x performance in Launchpad’s build farm with OpenStack

Canonical write that they have made some changes to the underlying infrastructure of Launchpad by migrating it to an OpenStack instance that they are calling ScalingStack. They look at the changes that they have seen and say in their conclusion: "...the scale of the hardware density increase surprised us, as did the performance improvements – the reductions in build time and the build queue were a nice side effect!"

Washington Devices Sprint

Steph Wilson, the new Editorial and Web Publisher, tells us about her first trip to America, her first Sprint and her first chili-dog which were all part of an absorbing week in which developers, designers and community members gathered for the Devices Sprint. She shows us several photographs taken during the week and shares with us an interview with Olga and Giorgio who both work on the Design Team.

Canonical Announces Its Own Distribution of Ubuntu OpenStack

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that Canonical has announced the Canonical Distribution of Ubuntu OpenStack which offers users the widest range of commercially supported vendor options. He goes on to say that it is currently in public beta for free but is limited to up to 10 physical and 10 virtual machines. Michael also links to the official press release.

Ubuntu at 10: All that way for this?

Bruce Byfield of Linux Magazine looks back at the last ten years, a week after Ubuntu celebrated the tenth anniversary of its first release, and says: "What nobody asked was the obvious question: after ten years, is Ubuntu a success?" Bruce describes the changes to Ubuntu's desktop, notes that Ubuntu's greatest failure is financial, and questions whether Canonical has a workable business model considering how saturated the mobile phone market is.

The science behind the ebb and flow of Ubuntu Unity's popularity

Jack Wallen of TechRepublic writes that he is surprised at the results of a recent about the popularity of various Linux desktops. He found that 63% of users, according to the poll, use Unity but predicts that figure will fall when the Unity 8 and Mir arrive.

Ubuntu 14.10 release update (sil2100):

  • Utopic released \o/
  • Vivid pocket opened, landings started - Currently no vivid Ubuntu Touch images building due to problems with the infrastructure, first images might have issues due to systemd etc.
  • Many discussions regarding the landing process - New ideas on the QA process for image promotion and regression scans, formalizing rules to make sure we get the most from our landings
  • A new 14.09 image promoted 2 weeks ago
  • Planned new 14.09 promotion this week - cut-off day for final landings for this image is Thursday 30th
  • Updating and adding documentation regarding the landing process (on the Ubuntu wiki)

  • Filippo Scognamiglio (https://launchpad.net/~flscogna) is re-writing the Terminal app to use a clean upstream plugin, plans to allow 3rd party apps to use the terminal as a component
